On October 6, 2018, at approximately 8:11 p.m, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck 19 kilometers northwest of Port-de-Paix, Haiti. The earthquake damaged structures and killed 18 people.
The earthquake was the strongest to hit Haiti since January 12, 2010, not including the aftershocks of the 2010 earthquake, and the shaking was felt as far away as Port-au-Prince.

The earthquake caused the fall of the front of the central police station of Port-de-Paix, which did not make a victim among the occupants. The rest of the building did not suffer visible damage. No major damage has so far been reported with regard to road, port, airport, health, education, sports and telecommunication infrastructures, with the exception of a cultural center that collapsed in Gros-Morne, in the Artibonite. The earthquake caused the death of 17 people - 9 in Port-de-Paix, 1 in Saint-Louis du Nord (North-West) and 7 in Gros Morne (Artibonite). At least 333 people are injured, most of them in hospitals in the North West, Artibonite and North departments. Hundreds of homes are destroyed or damaged. According to initial assessments, 7,783 families are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in the North West, Artibonite and North departments due to the partial or total destruction of their homes. The first evaluations of the teams deployed in the field reported 353 houses destroyed and 7,430 heavily or slightly damaged, some of which have cracks. Most of the damage was recorded in Port-de-Paix (North-West) and Gros-Morne (Artibonite). Infrastructure assessments are beginning to become clearer as sector teams are deployed. Some service infrastructures have suffered damage. In the Artibonite, 42 institutional buildings, schools, churches and other service institutions are heavily or slightly damaged in Gros Morne. Four national and private schools are destroyed in Pilate in the North. (reference # 12250)
The Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) in its latest revised balance sheet of Thursday, October 11, indicates that the earthquake of October 6 killed 18 people and 580 wounded . According to the latest evaluations, 11,497 houses (7,430 previous balance sheet) were either destroyed or damaged, 90% of them in the communes of Bassin-Bleu, Port-de-Paix, Saint-Louis (North-West) and Gros-Morne (Artibonite). The most affected commune in the north is Pilate where 15 people are injured and 533 homes affected. (reference # 12257)
7783 families are in urgent need of assistance, due to the partial or total collapse of their house. Damage is mainly concentrated at Port-de-Paix (Nord-Ouest) and Gros-Morne (Artibonite) with 353 collapsed houses and 7430 severely to lightly damaged houses, including some cracks. Some health and education infrastructure have been damaged. In the department of Artibonite, 42 institutional buildings (schools, churches and other) are either severely or lightly damaged at Gros Morne.
