September 19, 2017 Earthquake: Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla

The September 19, 2017, M 7.1 earthquake in Central Mexico occurred as the result of normal faulting at a depth of approximately 50 km. Focal mechanism solutions indicate that the earthquake occurred on a moderately dipping fault, striking either to the southeast, or to the northwest. The event is near, but not directly on, the plate boundary between the Cocos and North America plates in the region. At the location of this event, the Cocos plate converges with North America at a rate of approximately 76 mm/yr, in a northeast direction. The Cocos plate begins its subduction beneath Central America at the Middle America Trench, about 300 km to the southwest of this earthquake. The location, depth, and normal-faulting mechanism of this earthquake indicate that it is likely an intraplate event, within the subducting Cocos slab, rather than on the shallower megathrust plate boundary interface. At least 220 people killed at Mexico City, 74 in Morelos, 45 in Puebla, 13 in Estado de Mexico, 6 in Guerrero and 4 in Oaxaca. At least 6,000 people injured. At least 44 buildings collapsed and many others damaged at Mexico City. Many other buildings damaged or destroyed in the surrounding area. Significant damage to the electrical grid in Estado de Mexico, Guerrero, Mexico City, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla and Tlaxcala. It is important to note that no significant increase has been observed in the activity of the volcano that can be related to the earthquake of magnitude 7.1, registered on September 19 with an epicenter in the state of Puebla. (ref #11887)

Eight thousand houses were reported damaged by the Iztapalapa delegation (part of Mexico City) from the magnitud 7.1 earthquake yesterday afternoon. (ref #11892)

Puebla, Pue. The state government reported that there were 43 to 45 deaths resulting from the earthquake and seven people are missing in the municipalities of Acatlán de Osorio, Acatzingo and Coronango.

In the case of the capital of Puebla, the number of fatalities increased to nine, with confirmed deaths of a student from the Lazaro Cardenas High School of the Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP) and a six-year-old girl from the Heroes school of the Reform, who were hospitalized, said the city of Puebla.

Other affected quantifications in the state are 9,772 affected homes in 17 hospitals, 141 temples, 279 schools and 9, 772 homes, as well as 12 landslides.

Morelos is the State most affected by the earthquake that left 73 people dead, 196 injured and about 10,000 homes affected as well as 48 schools.

In the municipalities that have been affected, in Totolapan about 3,000 homes have structural damage. 120 people have received medical treatment, 20 injured, 10 chapels affected and 1 destroyed.

(In Tlayacapan) INAH realized a damage assessment of 19 chapels, 13 of which have severe damage. The mayor of Tlayacapan, Dionisio de la Rosa Santamaria, said the damages are incalculable in the municipality and 40 historical monuments are damaged and 600 homes and 5,000 people displaced.

In Axochiapan one died following the partial collapse of a church. Many are injured and 35 homes are destroyed and 200 homes are affected.

In Zacatepec 70 homes have collapsed and over 1,000 homes with damages that make them uninhabitable. Here, at least 6 people remain trapped in the debris.
