February 26, 2014 Earthquake: Kalgoorlie, Australia

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake has shaken Western Australia's Goldfields region. The quake hit at 8am on Wednesday (local time) at a depth of 15 kilometres, 30 kilometres west of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Geoscience Australia seismologist Eddie Leask said there were reports of people feeling the quake 100km away. The federal government agency said it had received more than 50 reports from people who had felt the earth move by 9am. "If you're very close to it, it's actually strong enough to rock parked cars," Seismologist Marco Maldoni said. "I must say we've had reports of walls cracking which is understandable given the size of the earthquake." (reference #10872)

Five days ago a magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck Western Australia's Eastern Goldfields region, just outside of Kalgoorlie. According to Northern Star "following the earthquake in the Kalgoorlie region on 26 February, some damage was incurred at the Raleigh underground mine". "Production at the Raleigh mine will be temporarily disrupted for around six to eight weeks in order to rectify the situation, which may delay 3000 to 5000 ounces of gold production this year," Northern Star said in a company statement. However, it stressed that its Rubicon and Hornet mines were unaffected by the tremors. The earthquake also forced the evacuation of the Frog's Leg and Homestead underground mines as well, according to The West. (reference #10871)
