At least one person killed and 32 injured in Chiang Rai. Many buildings and roads damaged in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Felt (V) at Chiang Rai and Hang Dong; (IV) at Chiang Mai, Lampang, Mae Sai and San Sai; (III) at Bangkok, Mae Rim and Samut Sakhon; (II) at Phra Pradaeng. Felt widely in northern Thailand. Also felt at Rangoon, Burma and at Hanoi, Vietnam. A strong earthquake shook northern Thailand and Myanmar on Monday evening, smashing windows, cracking walls and roads and damaging Buddhist temples. No casualties were reported... In Chiang Rai's Phan district, a road was split by multiple cracks, the worst a waist-high gash about the length of three vehicles. (reference #10954)

An elderly woman died and 23 other people were injured after a strong earthquake shook northern Thailand, an official said Tuesday, as aftershocks continued to rattle the mountainous region popular with tourists... Residents on Monday said they had seen cracked building facades, broken shop windows and damage to roads, while power was cut for several hours in Phan. (reference #10956)

Meanwhile, the Engineering Institute of Thailand found that at least 20 houses in tambon Dong Ma Da had been demolished by the earthquake. Assoc Prof Penneung Warnit-chai, an earthquake expert at the Asian Institute of Technology, who was also part of the inspection team, said the damage incurred was low when compared with similar earthquakes in other countries. He added that the buildings that crumbled were built using soft materials. (reference #10963)
