January 9, 1982 Earthquake: Maine, New Brunswick, USA, Canada

Slight damage (VI) at Bridgewater, Caribou, Easton, Haynesville, Monticello, Presque Isle, Oakfield and Stockholm, Maine. Felt in the Maritime provinces; parts of Quebec and throughout much of New England. (reference #1053)

The magnitude of the mainshock was 5.7. The mainshock was felt in Canada throughout all of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, at Ile d’Anticosti in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and along both shores of the St. Lawrence River from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to just northeast of Quebec City. In the U.S. the earthquake was felt throughout all of the New England states and as far southwest as Albany, New York […] The epicentral region of the 1982 earthquake was almost totally uninhabited, with the closest town lying about 30 miles (50 kilometers) away from the epicenter. The remote location of this earthquake probably greatly reduced the amount of damage caused by the shock. In New Brunswick cracks in walls were reported in New Denmark and Bathurst. In Maine after the earthquake some minor cracks were found in the masonry walls of some buildings in Presque Isle, and one homeowner reported that some cupboards were shaken loose from the wall in his basement. Residents in Aroostook County also reported road cracks up to an inch wide following the earthquake. In all of these cases, although the cracks were attributed to the earthquake shaking, it is not known if any of the cracks were in existence prior to the earthquake. (reference #13657)
