The Bingol earthquake was the worst of the year; 995 dead were identified, 700 injured were treated in field hospitals, 125,000 persons were left homeless; there was heavy damage, particularly in the town of Bingol which was 90 per cent destroyed, and at Genc; in the centre of Bingol, buildings in reinforced concrete were the only ones to resist the earthquake, but some damage was suffered by all buildings; destruction was total in the suburbs which were built of a mixture of stones and dried mud. The arrival of relief was delayed by the destruction of the bridge over the River Murat and by the absence of any airstrip. The Bingel valley does not form part of the North Anatolian fault, but of the series of subsidence basins and troughs which runs along the eastern edge of the Taurus and joins with the AntakyaMaras trench. This seismic zone of south-eastern Anatolia, whose importance was for a long time ignored, joins the North Anatolian fault in the neighbourhood of Lake Van (reference #1039)
