September 1, 1966 Earthquake: Southern, Greece

September 1, 1966, 14.23 UTC, 37.5 N, 22.1 E, magnitude 5.3 mb, 5.9 MS, depth 17 km. In the Megalopolis district, already devastated on 5 April 1965, further damage was caused by another earthquake on 1 September 1966: felt over an area of 250,000 km2, the tremor reached intensity VIII along the pleistocene fault-line, lying NNW-SSE several kilometres east of Megalopolis; 180 houses were destroyed, 1,500 rendered inhabitable. Happily there were few victims (25 injured) owing to the fact that most of the inhabitants were outside their houses and had been warned by a long rumbling. Among the places most affected were Megalopolis, Trilophos, Tripotamos, Plaka, Orestion, Yefikaria. While the 1965 earthquake occurred on the fault along the west of the Megalopolis rift-valley, the 1966 movement occurred on the fault forming the eastern edge of the graben. (reference #1039)

On September 1, 1966, at 15 hours 30 minutes (GMT) another earthquake with epicenter near Megalopolis caused additional damage [...] The shock destroyed 180 houses and rendered uninhabitable another 1,500 making about 6,000 persons homeless. No one was killed as that time of the day most people were outdoors and as the shock was preceded by a rumbling noise which lasted long enough for many persons to run outdoors; however 25 persons were injured.
