September 18, 1963 Earthquake: Cinarcik, Yalova, Turkey

1963, September 18. Intensity VIII. Eastern Marmara Earthquake: Instrumental epicenter 40o50'N, 29o1'E, depth 18.75 km, magnitude 6.1. 1 death was recorded. Maximum damage was at Cinarcik, 4 buildings were destroyed, 2 buildings suffered heavy and 6 buildings medium damage. In all the village around Yalova (including Cinarcik) 7 buildings were destroyed; 32 suffered heavy and 131 slight damage. (reference #1071) 1963, September 18, 16:58:12.5 UTC. 40.75 N, 29 E, magnitude 6.2 Ms. In the vicinity of the Gulf of Izmit; strongly felt-some damage in Istanbul; 1 killed, several injured; felt over a wide area (360,000 square kilometres) especially in Greece and on the islands of Lesbos, Lemnos and Chios. This was a widely felt earthquake in Ginarcik, Yalova, Karamursel, Kilic, Armutlu, Mudanya and Gemlik region (Eastern side of the sea of Marmara). In addition, the earthquake was felt in Bandirma (120 km far from the mainshock epicenter), where it caused some panic but no damage when the sea waves washed over the sea walls. Because of the 1 m. run up of waves for some time after the shock, people run out from the coffee houses which were located along the coast of Bandirma town (eyewitness account by the principal author). After the mainshock, a sea shell accumulation in E-W direction was reported along the coast of the gulf of Mudanya. The mainshock epicenter of this event was 40.75'N, 29E (Ozcicek, 1966/1967) and fell on the east-west striking tsunamigenic fault which was probably ruptured previously in 1509 and 1894 (Kuran, 1990a) (reference #3355)
