The total loss of life in 1950 was only 1526, out of which 500 people were drowned a few days after the earthquake by the flooding of rivers which followed the bursting of natural dams produced by numerous landslides (Gee, 1953; Kingdom-Ward, 1953; Poddar, 1953). (ref #9408)

1950, Aug 15, 22:09:34 local time. Zayii and Medog, Tibet Autonomous Region, 28.4 N, 96.7 E, magnitude 8.6, intensity >X.

80-90% of the mud and stone buildings collapsed. Wooden construction also fell in large quantity, cliffs fell. 90% of the mountain peaks toppled down. Roads were destroyed. The traffic was obstructed. The topography changed. The ground cracked, water and sand ejected. Roads changed course. Old rivers dried up, new rivers emerged.

Medog: All the old houses collapsed. Cliffs fell. Many people were killed. A large quantity of ground fissures as wide as 2 m, occurred along the Yarlung-Zangbo River. All the houses in Yedong, Didong, Beibeng, Gandai, Gelin, Zhuba, Pangxin and Zhongrong villages collapsed. Landslides and ground fissures occurred in large numbers. Yedong Village slid into the river during the landslide and was washed away. Ground fissures more than 1m wide and some dozens to hundreds meters long occurred mainly in the directions of the river course.

Mainling: All the houses in Ka'nadajieguo collapsed. Numerous ground cracks 10-100 m in length and 0.5-2 m in width occurred parallel to the river. Large rocks rolled down.

Nylngchi: Most houses in villages along the Niyang River collapsed. More than 200 people were killed.

Nangxian: A part of the houses collapsed. Ground cracks occurred in some places.

Zhag'yab: Houses in Jitang collapaed. Cliffs in Youxi fell down. Roads were destroyed. Houses in Kagong collapsed.

Baxoi: More than 20 rooms of houses in the southwestern region of Agong collapsed.

Sang'angqu: 90% of the mud and stone buildings were destroyed.

Zhaxize: Many houses collapsed by shaking. Several rooms of houses in Zhaxizcchongsa (may be Zhaxiehezong) collapsed. Some cliffs also fell down.

Taizhao region: All the houses in Maidekazong of Yangmozong collapsed.

Zela: All the houses collapsed.

Bowo Region: Many houses collapsed. In Pulong, Yuoergang and Xumuzong of Qingduozong; Daluo, Rankanggen and Songzong of Suowakasongzong; Jiazhong and Dengjiu of Yigongzong, a number of houses and lamaseries collapsed. Landslides occurred. The ground sunk in a few villages.

Baimagang: Many houses collapsed by shaking.

Qamdo Region: Several civilian houses in and around the Zadui Region and Edui Region (streams of Sichuan) collapsed. Rocks in Zongshuzhage (streams of Yunnan) fell down. Civilian houses in Chadui and Chamei of Qamdo collapsed.

Gangbu: Bujiu and Demuqiacheng temples collapsed. Many civilian houses in Qiaomuzongfu also toppled down. More than 100 lamas in Demuqiachong Temple were killed. Civilians were killed in large numbers. About 480 lamas in Ka'na Temple were killed.
