July 10, 1953, 03:53:38 UTC, 39.2 N, 70.8 E, depth 16 km, magnitude 7.4 MS, intensity IX-X. Great length of the fault plane; many aftershocks. According to [SS] "...an abrupt vertical tremor occurred accompanied by a roar...; in one instant all the buildings in Khait were destroyed ...; dust rose from the mountain slides; the entire area became cloudy and instantly grew dark. ... The ground shook so much that the trees bent to the ground. A car on the road

from Khait to Sairon (to the east) was tossed, and the

passengers were flung from the vehicle.... An aircraft that had just landed tossed and swayed.. . ."

According to [Gb], almost all the structures of local construction were destroyed in 24 populated points in an area with a length of 60-65 km and a width of 6-9 km. In the intensity 9 zone and in neighboring regions of the mountains, many earth slides occurred. The village of Khait and 20 kishlaks were buried by the slides in the Yasman river valley. The general number of populated areas affected is 33. The avalanche along the Yasman river valley had a length of about 20 km and a width of over 1 km.

Based on the damage caused by the earthquake, its

intensity is rated at 9; taking into account the surface

deformations, its intensity is up to 10.
