February 1, 1942 Earthquake: Simao, Yunnan Province, China

February 1, 1942, 01:30:47 Beijing time, Simao, Yunnan Province, 23.1 N, 100.3 E, magnitude 6.75, intensity VIII.

Macroseismic epicenter 22.8 N, 101.0 E

Simao: Hundreds of buildings collapsed or split

in the county's offices, warehouses, granaries,

schools, temples as well as civilian dwellings without

a single one left intact. The city walls collapsed

for more than 100 m in length, the north and east

gate towers completely collapsed. All watch towers

inside or outside the city were destroyed. The

same fate befell Yixiang Village 10 km from the

city. More than 90 persons were killed and innumerable people injured. Hundreds of domestic

animals were killed.

More than 20 shocks occurred from Dec. 26 to

31, 1941 (among them the Lancang Earthquake

magnitude = 7), houses suffered slight damage.

At mid-night of Jan 19, 1942, two shocks

occurred followed by another strong rock in the

next morning, bringing down a dozen public

and private buildings in and outside the city.

More than 10 shocks occurred up to the 22nd of

the month. In all, more than 280 aftershocks

took place spanning a period of more than 40

days since the Feb. 1 violent earthquake.
