January 14, 1929, 02:44:39 local time, West of Hohhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 40.7 N, 111.6 E, magnitude 6, intensity VIII.
The destruction was more severe around Bikeqi and
in most parts of Bingzhouhai, Beishizhou and Cilao. More than 100 rooms collapsed and walls fissured under shaking (According to the investigations of 1927, most of the old houses collapsed and new houses were split by shaking.) Some houses were wrenched. The outer layer of the white brick
pagoda on the hill fell. Landslide occurred and huge rocks fell from the hill at Erchakou, and fissures occurred in the ground. A woman and a baby were killed, and dozens of people were injured.
Hohhot: A few shabby houses in disrepair fissured by shaking. All houses were damaged at Dingjla-yingzi, several mud houses collapsed at Taoheqi, the brick and wood-frame houses fissured and collapsed under shaking.
Baotou: The enclosing walls of the Zhuanlong Temple,
0.5 km outside the eastern gate of the city fell by shaking, a section of rafter fell, and the brick walls fissured.
The shock was felt at Togtoh and Qingshuihe.
