March 16, 1925 Earthquake: Talifu, Yunnan Province, China

March 16, 1925, Near Dali, Yunnan Province, 25.7 N, 100.4 E, magnitude 7.

The earthquake wrought havoc with the city and the suburbs of Dali. Battlements and the northeast gate tower of Xiaguan were completely devastated, city walls collapsed at several places, the southwest gate tower was seriously destroyed, memorial archways and iron palisades fell. Official buildings, civilian houses and temples collapsed. They were razed in the severely-affected region, and walls were devastated in the slightly-affected region. In the northeastwards along the Erhai lake, at Shunmanyi, Xiajiyi and Xiaoyizhuang villiages, almost all temples and civilian houses collapsed and the streets were blocked, more than 10,000 walls failed, and over 76,000 houses collapsed or were burned in the downtown and the suburb region. Small fissures running in random directions occurred extensively on flat ground, banks in fields and lakeside. Sand emerged and black water gushed out from the ground fissures.

More than 40,000 families were affected by the quake, over 3,600 people were killed and 7,200 injured, and over 5,000 head of livestock were killed. Conflagration occurred after the shock.

Fengyi: Official buildings and civilian houses collapsed completely, city walls were demolished; 7,000-8,000 houses were razed in the eastern region, and almost all houses were razed in Huaying, Qingle and Changfa villages. 80% of the houses collapsed at Hongyan, 2,000-3,000 houses, were razed in the northern region, and the houses in Banzhuang Village were also razed. Longwangmiao Hill, over 100 m highand 15 km to the east of the city, collapsed for more than 30 m in length. A ground fissure about one hundred meters long occurred at the top of Fengshan Hill. Fissures occurred at the flat ground, roads, ridges, and along the Erhai Lake and in the fields. Two fountains gushed out from the flat ground. Fields and houses were drowned. Fire broke out at Shizijie and Xinyijie. More than 1,200 people were killed and 550 injured in the whole county.

Midu: 3,460 families were hit, 159 people were killed, and 165 injured in the whole county.

Xiangyun: More than 1,700 shabby rooms collapsed, over 100 new, solid walls were broken, 906 families were hit, and over 40 people were killed.

Binchuan: More than 800 people were killed and over 500 injured in the whole county.

Dengchuan: Collapses, destruction and casualties occurred in other villages.

Weishan: The road to Dafo Hill fissured by shaking, and casualties occurred.
