May 23, 1925 Earthquake: Tajima, Honshu, Japan

On May 23, 1925, a locally destructive earthquake occurred on the Japan Sea coast of Honshu, in the province of Tajima.

The 1925 epicenter, as determined from all available data, was near a small inlet, Tsuiyama cove. Vertical displacements were generally from a few centimeters to 20 centimeters, with one throw of 1 meter, possibly a slide.

The earthquake was moderately large (magnitude 6.75); at the time no adequate seismographs were operating in that part of Japan, and a precise epicenter is not available. However, the principal meizoseismal area was roughly semicircular, about 12 miles in diameter. There was also considerable

damage at Toyooka, about 7 miles south on unconsolidated ground, where the earthquake was followed by a destructive fire. The official death list was 395 and 3333 houses were destroyed.
