July 3, 1924 Earthquake: Xinjiang, China

July 3, 1924, 12:40:10 local time, East of Minfeng, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, 36.8 N, 83.8 E, depth 33 km, magnitude 7.25.

The earthquake occurred around Boshitang and Mitedaban

to the southeast of Minfeng County, where landslides and landslips occurred extensively and were large in scale. Deep fissures more than 1.5 m wide occurred in Mt. Boshitang. Numerous landslips along the banks dammed the river

course. Several landslides occurred around Mitedaban,

filled up gullies of more than 100m deep and buried more than 5,000 mu (1 mu=666.7 m2) of grassland.

Near Karasay, rocks rolled down and dammed the river course. Fissures occurred intermittently, about 2-3 m in depth, 1.5 m in width and from 2-3 m to 10-15 m in length on sandy hills. At Wuyilake, ground fissured extensively, all cave dwellings collapsed and some springs dried up.

The river banks at Kunqibulake collapsed and roads

were blocked.

In Minfeng County seat: Shabby houses, earthen walls and chimneys were damaged. The fissures occurred in the buildings of higher quality. Fissures appeared on the wet ground surface. Some people and livestock suffered casualties.

In the Qiemo (Qargan) County seat: Some shabby houses and walls fell and crevices occurred in the walls of other houses. Some tombs collapsed. Ground sank at some places. People and domestic animals suffered casualties.

The total death toll was more than 100 and over

5000 sheep were killed.

In the Yutian County seat: Part of the shabby houses collapsed or were destroyed.

The shock was felt in Qira, Ruoqiong (Qarkilik); Moyu (Karakax), Lop, and Yecheng (Kargilik).

Note: The wreckage resulted from the two great

earthquakes of July 3 and 12.
