The earthquake of 1916 in Turkey is one of these cases which shows that under certain conditions the macroseismic effects, even of a 20th century earthquake of magnitude greater than 7.0, can be missed out. What is known about this earthquake is that on 24 January 1916 a large shock was recorded in almost all seismolographic stations worldwide that excited widespread scientific interest about its location.

Unfortunately, the archives of the German Army for that period, which should have had some intelligence about the earthquake, were lost in a fire […]

The only pieces of macroseismic information that could be found tell us briefly that the earthquake was destructive in the regions of Hassun and Samsun where the shock caused great loss of life (Navarro-Neumann, 1919). The location of Hassun is not known. Also a Lloyd’s report refers to the log of a Spanish registered steamer, which after unloading its cargo at the port of Samsun it transported back to Sinop and Istanbul refugees from an area in the interior which had been destroyed by an earthquake (reference #14027)
