May 16, 1892 Earthquake: Guam, US Territories

1892, May 16. There was a strong earthquake on Guam Island. It began with sudden vertical shocks, which made all the inhabitants run to the street. Then, horizontal north-south and east-west oscillation began. The tremors lasted about a minute. The tiles flew off all the stone buildings and many buildings cracked. Two pits opened up in the ground about 5 km from Agana. The sea retreated from the shore right up to the reefs, but due to the fact that the return movement was slow, it did not advance beyond the shore in the center of the city, though it did in San Antonio quarter. Another three very strong shocks were felt at night.

1892, May 16. Philippines, Guam, in the Ladrowes. Intensity II which corresponds to buildings may be unroofed or shattered and some may fall, the ground may be badly cracked in places and small landslips occur.

1892, May 16, 21:10 [local time]. Intensity VIII. Destructive earthquake which severely damaged the masonry buildings in Agana and other towns, produced many fissures and displacements on the coasts and in other places. The sea retired suddenly, but no devastating alternations of floods and ebbs followed. The few aftershocks which occurred during the two following days were feeble.
