1871, December 8. 5:30 p.m. South Mindanao. "Cotabato: 5:30 p.m. Violent, oscillatory, N to Sand E to W, lasting 20 seconds. All buildings leveled to the ground. A half an

hour later there was a more violent shock which completed the ruin left by the former. Vibratory aftershocks all night. Continuous trembling all day on the 9th, with two shocks much stronger than those of the 8th. No habitable house left in the town. Deep, subterranean noises; an earthy odor perceived by all. Some destruction in Pollok. Davao: Strong, long, oscillatory earthquake. Two aftershocks within a few minutes at 7:00 a.m. on the 9th. At 9:20 two more from E to Wand N to S. Zamboanga: Two

shocks from E to W. Three short shocks at 6:30 p.m. On the 9th between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., five shocks E to W." Observatory record book. Also felt in west Misamis. (reference #3029)

1871, December 8, 17h 30m. Intensity IX. Destructive earthquake throughout the districts of Lanao, Cotabato, and Davao, Mindanao. It is reported that at Cotabato and Pollok not a single building remained standing; the happenings in the Moro villages and forts are not known. Even in Davao, at a distance of 200 kilometers, it developed great violence. Within one hour three series of most violent shocks were experienced, accompanied by subterraneous rumblings.
