July 25, 1855 Earthquake: Haut-Valais, Switzerland

July 25, 1855, 13h, 46.3 N, 7.9 E, intensity VIII-XI. One of the most violent earthquakes in Switzerland, damage in the region between Visp and Brig and in the Nikolaital (Saint Nicolas); the churches et Viege, Torbel, Saint Nicolas and partly that at Stalden collapsed, the tops of towers of several other churches fell as well as numerous houses, important damage in some Alpine valleys, e. g. at Macugnaga and San Carlo, at Belfort several walls fissured and

many chimneys fell, mud streams, rockslides, cracks in the ground in the valleys of Rhane and Viege; large extension up to Paris, Clermont-Ferrand, Parma, Verona, Dresden etc. (reference #1099)

July 25 to December 1855, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, Viege, all the east of France, Visp in the Valais (Piedmont) and in the Lower Rhine to Strassburg, intensity II which corresponds to buildings may be unroofed or shattered and some may fall, the ground may be badly cracked in places and small landslips occur.
