March 21, 1829 Earthquake: Torrevieja, Murcia, Spain

1829, March 21, 38.2 N, 0.9 W. Intensity IX-X. Disastrous earthquake in the province of Murcia, epicenter in the valley of Segura, several thousands of houses destroyed, thousands of people perished in the regions of Murcia, Guardamar, La Mata and Torrevieja, felt also in Madrid; sand and mud volcanoes, changes in the ground water level and in the course of the river Segura. 1829, March 21, 06h30m p.m. In the province of Murcia, Spain. Slightly perceived at Madrid, and at Beas de Segura in La Maneha. The valley of Segura seems to have been the centre of disturbance; there the shocks were most violent. Preceded by a slight shock at noon. That at 6h30m was the most violent of all those felt here this year, and was followed by more than a hundred others during the night. The damage done was enormous in very many towns and village of Murcia, and in Guardamar, La Mata and Torrevieja in Valencia, some places were totally ruined, and the destruction of churches and houses, and loss of life, was terrible. At Daja Naeva and Daja Vieja fissures opened in the earth and small holes appeared, from some of which large quantities of dry sand, and from others of sand and water, were thrown out. In Estremadura the water of a lake suddenly disappeared. On the right bank of the Segura, it was remarked, the shocks were more numerous and lasted longer than on the left. The course of this river has changed, and now enters the sea at a different place from its former mouth. (reference #497)

March 21, 1829. Intensity XI. Long series of catastrophic shocks from 1828 in 1837, in the Segura basin, including 21 March 1829 at Terrevieja and neighboring villages: 20 churches and 3,000 houses destroyed, 389 killed. The disaster also hit Murcia, Orihuela, Almoradi, Guardamar, Lorca, etc. In some districts, tower was completely destroyed. Torrevieja, changed into a heap of rubble, had to be rebuilt. The course of Seguar was deviated; many crevices and craters.(reference #1093)
