A severe earthquake was felt on 6 June 1828 in Kashmir valley. About 1000 lives were lost and fissures opened. It was followed by a great number of shocks for some months (reference #1095, #1100)

Vigne (1880) has given a greater detail: "On the night of 26"" June, 1828 AD, at half past ten, a very severe shock was felt, which shook down many a great houses, and killed a great number of people: perhaps 1000 persons were killed, and 1200 houses shaken down; although, being built with a wooden framework, the houses are less liable to fall than an edifice of brick or stone […] Burgess (1894), in his book 'The Chronology of Modem India four hundred years from the close of fifteenth century' also gives a brief mention of this "terrible earthquake." He writes: "in Srinagar 1,200 houses are destroyed and 1000 lives lost. Lesser shocks followed frequently for some weeks after." (reference #14071)
