1825, January 19, 11:45 UTC?. Ionian Sea, Ionian Islands, 38.25 N, 20.75 E, magnitude 6.8, intensity XI. A strong earthquake occurred on the Island of Levkas. All the houses collapsed in the town of Levkas; 34 inhabitants were killed. Some houses in Preveza came down, the ground cracked. Great damage was done to the mountain villages on the Island of Levkas. It was felt from the Island of Kerkyra to the Island of Zakynthos; a strong tsunami was observed near the Island of Levkas between the eastern coast of the island and the Islet of Sesoula. All houses in the town Levkas collapsed, 34 victims, the town Levkas almost totally destroyed, many inhabitants perished, at Preveza some houses were thrown down, the earth opened, also the villages in the mountains of the island Levkas suffered much, felt from Kerkira (Korfu) to Zakinthos (Zante). 1825 Januaryy 19, Lefkas. Prevesa was almoost totally ruiined; morre than 100 houoses were thrown doown and peeople were killed.

In the Island of Lefkas, particularly its western part, many villages were badly damaged. Two of them were totally destroyed and one of them was completely overwhelmed by a large rock slide. Dragano and its church were totally destroyed. […] In villages 4 churches and 145 houses collapsed; 166 houses were damaged beyond repair, 460 suffered reparable damage […] Almost all the houses in the town of Santa Maura were damaged beyond repair and many collapsed […] In the town of Santa Maura about 60 people were killed and 80 were injured. The earth shaking lasted for about 12–13 s […] Extensive damage was caused in Ayia Mavra and to its fortress, where six churches and 264 houses collapsed, while of the remaining houses, 165 were ruined, 123 sustained reparable damage, 563 were rendered beyond repair, and only 170 did not suffer important damage. Storehouses of oil, salt, and wine were destroyed. The bridge of the fortress was entirely destroyed. The damage was significant in many villages, particularly on the western side of the island, where 4 churches and 145 houses collapsed, while of the remaining houses, 460 sustained reparable damage, 166 were rendered beyond repair, and 1872 did not suffer important damage. Dragano was totally destroyed, including the church of the village. In Tsoukalades, to the west of Amaxiki, 19 fatalities were officially reported. In total, at least 60 persons were killed and 80 were injured on the island. The earthquake was damaging on the mainland as well. For example, in the city of Preveza, more than 100 houses were thrown down, killing people. In Corfu, it was felt but not damaging. The next day, two small houses in Ayia Mavra were thrown down by aftershocks. (reference #14265)
