1727 October 29 (O.S.) [Nov 09 1727]. the earthquake shaking was quite strong and caused damage to many structures is well documented in many written records that exist from this time period. Although most structures in the area surrounding the apparent earthquake epicenter at Newbury, Massachusetts, survived the earthquake, a number of reports attest to the damage that some structures sustained due to the strong ground shaking […] There was also some damage caused by the earthquake to towns in New Hampshire just north of the Newbury and Amesbury area […] The earthquake was felt as far southwest as Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and as far northeast as Arrowsic in Maine. It was felt to the southeast as far as Nantucket Island, which is the farthest extent of land in that direction. From the limited area with reported damage, the more distant reports of strong shaking and noises but no damage, and the largest distance to which the earthquake was felt, the magnitude of this event is estimated to be about 5.6 or so. The duration of the ground shaking of about one to one and a half minutes is consistent with an earthquake of this magnitude. (reference #13657)
