June 5, 1722 Earthquake: Damiliani, Athani, Hagios Petros, Lefkada, Greece

1722, May 22. Ruinous earthquake on the island of Sainte Maure: severe destruction at Damiliani, Athani and Hagios Petros. Little damage at Amaxiki. Nine months after, the February 11, 1723: displacement of the epicenter with a Amaxiki destruction and some dead. Serious damage in the northern part of the island and strong repercussions in Epire. 1722, June 5[?]. 38.7 N, 20.6 E, magnitude 6.4, intensity VIII. In a note of a priest of Leukada it is written that on 25 May at 5 hours after the afternoon two shocks, the one after the other, shook the island and pulled down many houses in Athani, Damiliani and in Saint Petroso. The capital Amaxike suffered less. Serious damage was caused in the fortress of Saint Maura (Stamatelos, 1870; Sieberg, ..1932b; Machaeras, 1951). This is considered by Stamatelos as the sixth destruction of Leukada since 1612. (reference #4408)

Earthquake on 25 May/5 June 1722. This earthquake and its impact are known from the earthquake archive by Zampelios as well as by a Venetian document. It was reported that many houses collapsed in several villages, mainly in the southwest of the island where the damage was extensive. This happened in the villages of Athani, Ayios Petros, and Damiliani. However, in the town of Amaxiki, in the northern part of the island, the earthquake was less violent, although serious damage was caused to the fortress of Ayia Mavra. Many smaller shocks followed for several days. (reference #14265)

1722 Jun 5 Lefkas. Two consecutive earthquakes in the southwest of the island of Lefkas caused the collapse of many houses and great losses in the villages of Athani, Diamiliani and Ayios Petros. At Amaxiki the shocks were less severe, and there followed many other weaker shocks. They also caused some damage to the castle of Santa Maura. A dispatch from Santa Maura to Venice says that towards dawn, on Thursday 25 May (a Friday O.S.), two consecutive earthquakes in Santa Maura (Lefkas) damaged its fort and all villages in the island (ASV Lett. P. A. Manio, Santa Maura, 25 February 1723, b.86). A local diary places the earthquake on 22 May and adds that in the villages of Athani, Diamiliani and Aipetro the earthquake caused great damage and that at Amaxiki the shock was less severe. Venetian correspondence from the other islands does not mention the earthquake (Albini et al . 1994, 17). (reference #9116)
