Mariana (1601), the first reference, refers to large damage in coastal towns specially Seville and Lisbon. Moreira (1758), quotes Mariana (1601) and refers to damages in Lisbon, Seville, Cordova and other towns in Spain and adds that the earthquake was similar to those of 1531 and1755. Feijoo (1756) dates it on 23 August, with damage in Lisbon, Algarve and Seville, and refers to the contemporary testimony of Pedro Lopez de Ayala, Major Chancellor of the Kingdom of Castille.
