Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1040 AM PDT Sat Apr 11 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Several days of breezy to windy conditions are expected through the weekend. This will lead to areas of blowing dust, difficult driving conditions, and hazardous boating conditions on area lakes. * A slow moving storm system will bring chances for light valley rain and high elevation snow this weekend into early next week. A few thunderstorms may also occur, especially Sunday and Monday. && .DISCUSSION... Gusty winds developed across the region Friday in response to a trough moving into northern California. Winds quickly diminished early overnight and most areas have stopped gusting altogether at this hour. The Wind Advisory was allowed to expire on time as gusts and impacts have ended. This system also was robust enough for showers and isolated thunderstorms to develop- mainly in Inyo and Esmeralda counties. This precipitation has also started to wane overnight, with any lingering precipitation tonight remaining in the Sierra. This trough will lift northeast today, weakening as it does so. While breezy southwest winds are expected again today, they should not be as strong as yesterday and wind impact will be limited. The exception is in the Colorado River Valley where winds will be similar to yesterday, resulting in continued choppy waves. With similar conditions and impacts as yesterday, decided to extend the Lake Wind Advisory through today to capture potential impact to boaters. Precipitation will also be limited today as the trough axis moves through which will scour moisture and reduce forcing. While the Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect tonight, light intermittent snow is expected tonight through this afternoon before additional precipitation arrives this evening and continues through Sunday. No changes were needed to the Winter Weather Advisory as impacts and amounts have not changed. On Sunday and Monday, a stronger system is expected to move into the region. This will result in another round of gusty winds and precipitation chances. Most of the moisture will be intercepted by the Sierra where upslope flow should allow for decent snowfall tonight through Sunday. Further east, precipitation may struggle outside of the terrain with limited moisture. Cold core processes could overcome this Sunday afternoon, especially as an axis of moisture sneaks in from Southern California. As the low move into Utah on Monday, lingering low end chances for showers exist in the Southern Great Basin, but winds should be lower than Sunday. Cant rule out a rumble of thunder under the low's center Sunday and Monday afternoon. The main concern with this next system will be increasing southwest winds. There are widespread high chances (70%+) for gusts to reach 40 MPH on ensemble probability maps on Sunday, though Ensemble ECMWF meteograms show wind gusts split on if wind gusts will exceed 40 MPH. The best chances for wind impacts Sunday will be across the typical areas of the Mojave Desert into southwest Utah and western Arizona, as well as the Colorado River Valley. Gusty southwest winds on Sunday could impact driving conditions, result in patchy blowing dust, and bring additional boating impacts to area lakes. Temperatures will cool with the parade of systems today through early next week. After the low exits late Monday, some flavor of ridging will build into the region which should dry things out, bring lighter winds, and warm temperatures slowly through the week. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...South- southwest winds remain elevated throughout the TAF period, although gusts will diminish at times overnight. Gusts to around 30 knots today, but are expected to be around 35 knots on Sunday with the direction remaining around 200-230 degrees. Few to scattered clouds at or above 15kft. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Gusty southerly to westerly winds across the region through Sunday. Gusts of 15-30 knots are likely today, gradually weakening after sunset, but will increase Monday with gusts between 30-35 knots. Dry conditions prevail through this evening with mostly high clouds around. However, rain chances creep up to ~40% in the Owens Valley and southwestern Great Basin late tonight as precipitation tries to spill over the Sierra.
