Area Forecast Discussion

.KEY MESSAGES...

* A pattern change will bring cooling temperatures and increasing
  winds to southeastern California, southern Nevada, and
  northwestern Arizona beginning today.

* Precipitation chances will increase across the region over the
  weekend, with chances lingering into Monday for portions of the
  area.

.DISCUSSION...through Thursday.

Increasing cirrus cloud cover continues to overspread the region
this afternoon in advance of a weakening Pacific low that will
bring a return of unsettled conditions to the area. Breezy
southwesterly winds have already surfaced across most of the area
and winds will remain elevated through the weekend as pressure
gradients tighten. The initial low will move inland Saturday
morning, only to be replaced by a deeper trough moving in on its
heels. This second low will bring more widespread and gusty winds
to the region on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, this second
system will provide a reinforcing shot of cooler air, which will
knock temperatures down to around 10 degrees below normal on
Sunday and Monday.

Precipitation expectations remain fairly minor, and largely
confined to the Sierra through Saturday, before precipitation
chances shift eastward Sunday and linger Monday as the deeper low
moves through. Precipitation totals will be limited outside of the
Sierra, largely favoring the higher terrain - though some
isolated thunderstorm activity could being a few locally stronger
downpours. Across the Sierra, light snowfall generally above 7000
feet is expected as early as Saturday morning, though the brunt of
snow accumulation is expected Saturday night into Sunday when 4-8
inches of snow may fall in locations like Aspendell, with up to a
foot near the Sierra Crest. Further east across the Great Basin
and Spring Mountains, light snow accumulations will be possible as
well but are not expected to be enough to cause any noteworthy
impacts. High pressure will gradually rebuild next week with a
warming and drying trend expected.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Breezy
southwesterly winds should decrease tonight, but gusts of at
least 15 to 20 knots will continue. These winds should increase
late Friday morning with gusts between 20 and 25 knots. Mid and
high clouds will gradually decrease in coverage through the
forecast period.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Breezy south to
southwest winds may weaken tonight, but should remain elevated
across much of the area, including the Las Vegas Valley. Winds will
strengthen again tomorrow morning with widespread gusts between 20
and 25 knots, as well as gusts of around 30 knots at KDAG and KBIH.
Mid and high clouds will gradually decrease in coverage through the
forecast period.
