Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
410 AM PDT Sun May 24 2026

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Mainly dry conditions and above normal temperatures will continue
  through Memorial Day.

* Breezy winds and cooler temperatures will spread across the region
  beginning Tuesday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Today through next weekend.

A weak ridge of high pressure will remain in place across much of
the region today, keeping temperatures above normal in many
locations. Afternoon highs will top out 3 to 7 degrees above
climatological normals through Memorial Day, with afternoon breezes
developing each day. Modest mid-level moisture remains in place
across the southern Great Basin, and this, along with strong
afternoon heating, may support isolated to scattered high-based
showers and virga over the Sierra and portions of Inyo, Esmeralda,
central Nye, and Lincoln Counties this afternoon and evening.
Elsewhere, dry conditions will persist through tomorrow.

By mid-week, a change in the pattern is expected as a fairly deep
trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest drops south into
the Great Basin. The low is then expected to slowly move across our
area during the second half of the week while gradually weakening.
As this system drops south, gusty south to west winds are expected
across much of the area Tuesday and Wednesday, with the strongest
winds likely across our typical wind prone areas of the western
Mojave Desert, southern Nevada, and central and northern Mohave
County in Arizona. Temperatures will also cool from Wednesday
onward, with readings falling to a few degrees below normal in many
areas. Given its inland origins, moisture with this system will
remain limited, with only the southern Great Basin seeing any
meaningful increase in POPs, and even there rainfall amounts will
remain light. Improving conditions are expected late in the week and
into next weekend as heights rise and temperatures return to near
normal levels.

&&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Light
south-southwest winds early this morning will give way to
southeasterly breezes by mid-morning. Winds will increase this
afternoon while gradually turning more southerly. Gusts to around 20
knots are expected during the afternoon and early evening hours,
with wind directions generally between 140 and 190 degrees. Winds
will weaken after sunset and return to their typical south-southwest
direction. VFR conditions will prevail with mainly clear skies this
morning, then FEW to SCT high clouds with bases AOA 20kft AGL
thereafter.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Light winds early this
morning will give way to another round of moderate south-southeast
breezes this afternoon. Occasional gusts generally between 15 and 25
knots are also possible from mid-afternoon through early evening at
most area terminals. The exception will be near KDAG, where easterly
breezes are expected this afternoon followed by the typical westerly
push in the evening. Isolated showers and/or virga are possible
along the Sierra, southern Great Basin, and northeastern Mohave
County during the afternoon. Gusty, erratic winds are possible near
any shower or virga activity. VFR conditions will prevail in all
other areas.

&&

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
