.KEY MESSAGES...

*  Above normal temperatures and periods of breezy afternoon winds
   continue today and tomorrow.

*  More substantial winds and cooler temperatures are likely by
   the weekend as a trough moves into the Great Basin.

.DISCUSSION...through next Wednesday.

The weak system that brought elevated winds yesterday will continue
to track east. Heights aloft rise and surface temperatures increase
several degrees between today and tomorrow in response. Highs will
be 5 to 10 degrees above normal, which for Las Vegas means highs in
the upper 90s. Breezy southerly to southwesterly winds pick up on
Friday afternoon ahead of the next system, with gusts between 25 and
35 mph in western San Bernardino County.

The next system will move into the Great Basin and Mojave Desert
this weekend. Winds at 850 mb between 45 and 50 knots will support a
band of gusty southwesterly winds between San Bernardino, Clark, and
Mohave Counties on Saturday. Surface winds decrease somewhat on
Sunday as these upper level winds weaken. However, enhanced
northerly winds will arrive on Monday as the system moves east, the
strongest of which should occur in the Colorado River Valley. Will
probably need some wind headlines this weekend into early next week,
but the spatial and temporal extent of any potential headlines is
still in question. Besides wind, expect a cooling trend with
temperatures falling to 5 to 10 degrees below normal on Monday. For
Las Vegas, this means highs in the low to mid 80s. After the system
exits, calmer conditions return and temperatures increase again
midweek.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Light
winds of 10 knots or less are likely into tonight. Winds will
initially remain northeast to east before veering to the southeast
by mid-afternoon.  Typical southwest winds will develop after
sunset. Conditions on Friday will initially remain similar to today
before southerly winds increase to around 15 knots with higher gusts
during the afternoon. VFR conditions will prevail through tomorrow,
with no significant cloud cover expected.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Winds across the region
will generally remain around 5 to 10 knots into the early evening,
following typical daily directional patterns. In the northern Owens
Valley near KBIH, a shift to the west-northwest is expected around
sunset as downslope winds develop in the lee of the Sierra, with
intermittent gusts to around 20 knots for a few hours before winds
decrease to 6 to 8 knots overnight. Another exception will be across
the western Mojave, including KDAG, where gusty west-southwesterly
winds are expected during the early evening, with gusts of 25 to 30
knots persisting into the overnight period before decreasing to less
than 15 knots Friday morning. Otherwise, winds will generally remain
below 10 knots into Friday morning, with localized terrain-driven
breezes. VFR conditions will prevail, with no operationally
significant cloud cover expected through Friday.
