Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Great Falls MT 1143 AM MDT Tue Mar 17 2026 Aviation Section Updated. .KEY MESSAGES... - Winds will be strong and gusty for much of the workweek, especially along the Rocky Mountain Front and the plains. - Mostly dry conditions with temperatures warming to unseasonably warm levels Wednesday through Friday. - A Pacific trough and cold front looks to bring cooling temperatures and a brief period of showery conditions this weekend. && .DISCUSSION... /Issued 518 AM MDT Tue Mar 17 2026/ - Meteorological Overview: An anomalously strong ridge of high pressure will strengthen and remain entrenched over the Great Basin and southwestern CONUS through the weekend. Although temperatures trend towards unseasonably warm levels for the second half of the workweek, strong westerly flow will reside over the Northern Rockies and maintain daily rounds of strong, gusty winds, mostly along the Rocky Mountain Front and the plains. While it looks windy everyday through early Saturday, the strongest H700 winds look to be phased with peak diurnal mixing best on Friday ahead of an approaching Pacific trough. Mostly dry conditions will prevail aside form passing shortwaves bringing mostly mountain lower end shower activity. Ensembles are coming into agreement with the ridge starting to weaken this weekend and allowing a stronger Pacific trough and cold front to move through the Northern Rockies. This will bring a short period of showery, windy conditions while temperatures cool closer to average for at least a few days. - RCG - Forecast Confidence & Scenarios: Windy conditions continue through Saturday... A tight surface pressure gradient and a 60 to 80 kt H700 jet will bring the strongest surface winds to the Rocky Mountain Front and plains this morning with diurnal mixing maintaining windy conditions in the afternoon. The inherited high wind warning still looks good, though there was some consideration given to annex Cascade County to this warning with some gusts over 55 mph during the overnight hours. Decided to hold off with the strongest mid- and upper level flow occurring this morning. This timing may also result in the most robust 70 to 90 mph gusts along the Rocky Mountain Front to be more localized to the immediate eastern slopes. The elevated flow aloft and efficient diurnal mixing continues through at least Friday, but not quite as strong and still not quite precisely phased with peak diurnal heating, at least for Wednesday and Thursday. For this reason I decided to hold on any high wind products for now; however, this does not mean that it won't be windy, or isolated locations with high wind criteria winds. The Rocky Mountain Front and the plains will once again be the recipients of the stronger winds here. On Friday, some deterministic models are bringing stronger winds aloft ahead of the Pacific trough and cold front due in on Saturday. Then of course the passage of the Pacific trough and cold front themselves will bring another opportunity for strong winds on Saturday. The uncertainty for Saturday will be a Canadian front undercutting the elevated winds aloft. All of these day will continue to be monitored over the next few days, but currently the Friday through early Saturday period looks like the timeframe for the most widespread stronger winds for all areas, not just the plains and the Rocky Mountain Front. Probabilities highlight the potential for widespread winds around this time, though below a 50% chance for gusts over 60 mph for most locations. - RCG && .AVIATION... 17/18Z TAF Period Strong northwesterly flow aloft will continue to bring gusty, to at times strong, surface winds, mountain wave turbulence, and instances of low level wind shear for much of the TAF period.
