.DISCUSSION...Strong high pressure remains entrenched across the
Desert Southwest this evening, with widespread near record to
record temperatures recorded across the region today. As a Pacific
trough shifting into the Northwest Sunday, heights will fall
across northern Utah. A dry cold front will gradually shift
southward into northern Utah Sunday evening, reaching central Utah
early to mid Monday, before stalling. Southern Utah should largely
remain south of this boundary until later Tuesday, when the upper
trough finally pushes into the High Plains.
Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories remain in place
across much of the region. The only change to this suite of
products was to extend eastern Box Elder County through Sunday.
With little recovery overnight and temperatures only falling a few
degrees Sunday, the threat of heat-related illness will continue
in this area.
Gusty west to southwest winds will develop Sunday afternoon south
of the dry cold front and bring critical fire weather conditions
to a large part of the state. For those near large wildfires
including Widemouth 2, continue to monitor information from public
safety officials if near the fire. Additional fire starts are
likely. Please be extremely careful with any sources of ignition.
Red Flag Warnings continue for much of the region...and for
eastern and southern areas that remain ahead of the front and/or
downslope behind the front, Red Flag Warnings may need to be
extended into Monday.
Ensemble members continue to indicate an increasing probability a
monsoon surge will reach southern Utah by Saturday. The vast
majority of members indicate precipitable water values will exceed
75th to 85th percentile later Saturday into Sunday. Something to
watch...but pretty far out there.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Southeasterly winds will likely prevail
through the night, but may become light and variable after 12z
before transitioning to northwesterly between 17-18z. VFR
conditions will likely prevail, though wildfire smoke from local
and regional wildfires moving into the region may cause slantwise
VIS reductions.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Winds will remain largely light
and terrain-driven overnight, though a weak boundary will produce a
period of breezy northerly winds tonight across far northwest/north-
central Utah. VFR conditions will likely prevail outside of any
wildfire smoke from both local and regional fires, which could
produce slantwise VIS reductions and hazy skies.

.FIRE WEATHER, Issued 137 PM MDT Sat Aug 1 2026...
Strong high pressure in place is resulting in hot and dry
conditions today with generally light winds. A Pacific Northwest
trough will move onshore today and across Idaho and Montana
through Monday, pushing a dry cold front into northern Utah late
Sunday into Monday. Ahead of this front, southerly winds will
become breezy during the day Sunday, combining with minimum
relative humidity values in the upper single digits to lower teens
to produce areas of critical fire weather conditions. Have issued
a Red Flag Warning for southern Utah, the Uinta Basin, and most
mountain zones. Winds will become breezy behind the front late
Sunday into early Monday across northwest Utah, but believe
relative humidities will be above critical values at that time.
Some breezy winds could linger over southern Utah Monday, but will
overall be less than Sunday, making the threat of critical fire
weather conditions more localized. Dry conditions are expected to
continue through at least midweek, with a chance of monsoon
moisture creeping into southern Utah for the latter half of the
upcoming week. Temperatures will be below normal for northern Utah
Monday into Tuesday, becoming quite hot again by the upcoming
weekend. Little change in temperatures is anticipated for southern
Utah.
