.WHAT HAS CHANGED...
After a quiet weather day on Thursday, the end of the work week
will feature a clipper system encroaching on the area beginning
Friday morning. This disturbance is progged to bring a slew of
weather hazards in the form of heavy snow, strong mountain wind
gusts, and dangerously cold temperatures.

Multiple headline decisions were made with this forecast
issuance, including Winter Storm Warnings/Winter Weather
Advisories, Cold Weather Advisories/Extreme Cold Warnings, and a
High Wind Watch for Friday into the weekend.

.KEY MESSAGES...
- 1) An Alberta clipper rounds out the work week and promotes
  accumulating snow showers across the area. Winter Weather
  Advisories/Winter Storm Warnings will be in effect for Friday
  into Saturday morning.

- 2) A cold front passing through Friday night will yield a
  quick uptick in strong wind gusts along the mountains. A High
  Wind Watch is in effect for upcoming winds as strong as 60
  mph.

- 3) In addition to the strong winds, dangerously cold
  temperatures filter down behind the front beginning on
  Saturday and prevailing through the weekend. Cold Weather
  Advisories/Extreme Cold Warnings will be in effect for
  locations that are anticipated to observe very cold wind
  chills.

- 4) Milder temperatures settle into the area for the beginning
  of next week, which will chip away at the lingering snowpack.

.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGE 1...

After a quiet weather day on Thursday, the end of the work week
will feature a clipper system encroaching on the area beginning
Friday morning. Light snow showers to start will quickly be
followed by a stronger push of heavy snow Friday afternoon as
the disturbance tracks across the Great Lakes region and drives
a cold front through the forecast area. Activity becomes more
upslope driven by the evening on Friday, growing more confined
to the higher terrain in the process.

Peak times for snow accumulation across the lower elevations
looks to be the late morning hours into early Friday evening.
Hi-res CAMs offer a decent signal for heavy snow as the Friday
morning commute wraps up and remains moderate to heavy through
the afternoon before clearing out from west to east. For the
higher terrain, potential for accumulating snow will grow in
earnest by the middle of the day and will remain triumphant
overnight into Saturday morning.

In regards to winter headlines:

- The Winter Storm Watch for the mountains has been upgraded to
  a Winter Storm Warning, and now includes additional counties
  down into southeast West Virginia. These locations may obtain
  up to 4 to 8 inches of snow from Friday afternoon into
  Saturday morning, with locally higher amounts up to 6 to 10
  inches possible along our westward facing slopes.

- A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect at various times
  for the remaining counties in the forecast area. For portions
  of northeast Kentucky and southeast Ohio, the Advisory will be
  in effect from 7 AM Friday to 1 AM Saturday, with the heaviest
  snow occurring in the morning to the afternoon. Snow amounts
  are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches. For our West
  Virginia counties in the Advisory, snow amounts ranging
  between 1 to 4 inches may occur between 10 AM Friday to 7 AM
  Saturday. The lower end in amounts are projected for those
  closer to the Ohio River and increase in accumulation the
  further east you go.

Snow comes to an end Saturday morning as the last bit of
moisture squeezes out on the northeast West Virginia mountains.
High pressure settles in for the rest of the weekend and into
the start of next week.

KEY MESSAGE 2...

A cold front progressing through the area in conjunction with
the clipper system will set forth a strong uptick in winds along
the higher elevations starting late Friday night. Surface gusts
will be up in earnest for our higher ridges shortly after
midnight Friday night and could reach gusts as strong as 55 to
60 miles per hour. This will also contribute to the potential
for blowing snow and near-blizzard conditions as upslope snow
showers prospers during the overnight hours. Opted for a High
Wind Watch for northwest Pocahontas and southeast Randolph
Counties beginning late Friday night and into Saturday evening.
Winds will remain elevated even when the snow ends.

KEY MESSAGE 3...

A strong push of Arctic air trickles down into the region in the
wake of the cold frontal passage overnight Friday. Similar to
what was previously observed at the end of January, dangerously
cold temperatures will prosper over the region starting early
Saturday morning and through the weekend. Forecast wind chills
bottom out to near minus 30 along the higher mountain ridges,
warranting an Extreme Cold Warning for Saturday morning through
Sunday morning. Other parts of the north-central lowlands could
also see wind chills reach down as low as minus 10 to minus 14
through at least Saturday morning. Elected to hoist a Cold
Weather Advisory for portions of southeastern Ohio and central
West Virginia, with potential expansions in location and time
possible depending on future model data.

A building ridge will begin to promote a warming trend for the
start of next week, alleviating the cold spell over the Central
Appalachians.

KEY MESSAGE 4...

Milder weather arrives for Monday and into next week as winds
shift out of the southwest in the midst of building ridging
aloft. This will begin to chip away at the snowpack residing
over the forecast area from previous winter events. A thing of
note will be the potential for rapid melting, which could
affect local rivers that remain ice covered. Additionally,
upcoming rainfall slated for the middle of next week could
exacerbate the rate of melting and lead to the risk for
flooding.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Widespread VFR conditions will prevail during the overnight
hours across most sites. Satellite imagery shows a 7,000 feet
cloud deck moving southeast across our CWA. Expect cloud bases
to lower to around 2,000 feet towards 12Z and beyond.

A clipper system pushes a cold front east this afternoon,
bringing widespread snow to the area today into tonight. Periods
of IFR/LIFR conditions will be possible under moderate to heavy
snow, mainly during the afternoon hours.

The snow is likely to be most persistent at BKW this evening and
tonight with IFR/LIFR visibility and ceilings restrictions.
Maintained PROB30 groups to account for these conditions.

A reinforcing cold front brings colder airmass to the area
tonight, perhaps keeping lingering snow showers behind it into
Sunday morning. Periods of IFR conditions will be possible
within snow squalls.

Winds will be south southwest under 10 knots, veering from the
west behind the front later this afternoon. Then, a strong
pressure gradient develops, to produce strong northwest winds
and wind gusts Friday night, lasting into Sunday morning.
