Issued at 208 PM MST Wed Jan 7 2026 Initial wave moves through the area overnight/early Thu, though best forcing looks to stay mainly south. Expect mostly scattered snow showers (perhaps some rain showers on the plains) late tonight through Thu morning as system moves by, though precip amounts in general look light. Main wave then approaches Thu, while surface cold front sweeps south through the plains in the morning. Snow increases across the mountains during the day, with rain showers along the I-25 corridor changing to snow late afternoon/early evening as colder air moves south and lift increases. Still some model differences on placement of heaviest precip Thu night into Fri morning, with large spread among various solutions (NAM/HRRR further south and faster with heavy QPF along I-25, GFS/RFS farther north (along the Palmer Divide) and several hours slower. Several CAMS then show rather strong north wind developing over the plains Fri morning, which would end snow fairly quickly, while 12z GFS/ECMWF and few of their ensemble members show a much slower end to the snow Fri, with heavy amounts (greater that 6 inches) along the NM border/srn Sangres. Determining factor for precip strength/timing appears to be strength of the mid level circulation, with Euro solution looking stronger than GFS and many CAMs, though GFS QPF looks rather high across El Paso County given weakness of 700 mb flow. Snow then tapers off from north to south Fri, though with strong north winds and temps at/below freezing, some areas of blowing snow will be possible for much of the day, especially south of the Arkansas River. Given the uncertainty, kept the winter storm watch going for nrn El Paso and the srn I-25 corridor, plus added Teller County to the watch as well. Added advisories for the Sangres and Continental Divide, starting midday Thu and continuing into Fri, though snowfall along the Continental Divide may not be particularly heavy (3-7 inches), but winds will be strong enough for some blowing snow and poor visibility. Storm total snow amounts didn't change much from the previous forecast, and followed NBM for the most part as it looked like a nice compromise between various solutions. Impact-wise, Thu evening may be the most problematic, with potential for a few hours of very heavy snow from Monument down to Pueblo (GFS/RFS say north, NAM/HRRR say south), especially after 5-6 pm. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
