Gusty south winds will continue this evening and last into the
night time hours, but humidity values will gradually increase as
the evening progresses. Winds will shift to the northwest and

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Near normal temperatures and lots of sunshine expected today, with
  hardly any wind by springtime in Colorado standards.

- Winds increase across our southern plains on Monday, which has
  led to a Fire Weather Watch for Baca County. Fire danger
  increases in coverage on Wednesday.

- Off and on chances for showers and thunderstorms are expected
  next week, with highest chances for Thursday through Saturday.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Ridging to our west weakens and flattens overhead today, leading to
slightly increased westerly flow and a bit more downsloping.
Temperatures look to be a few degrees warmer than yesterday for most
locations, and still very near normal for this time of year. Highs
look to climb into the 60s for our mountain valleys and the I-25
corridor, with low 70s across the far eastern plains. Skies will be
mostly clear. Winds will be fairly light for most locations, though
southerly gusts to around 25 mph may be possible across our southern
plains. This may lead to brief, spotty, elevated fire weather
conditions across southern Las Animas and southern Baca counties. At
this time, conditions are not expected to be long-lived or
widespread enough to warrant fire weather highlights. Precipitation
is not expected across the forecast area today or tonight. Overnight
lows look to drop to near normal ranges, with most of the plains
cooling into the 30s and low 40s overnight, and mountain valleys
dipping down into the 20s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Monday Through Wednesday..

Our flow aloft remains zonal for Monday, which will help to warm us
up into the upper 60s for mountain valleys and middle to upper 70s
across the plains. Humidity values in the low to mid teens are also
likely, though winds look to remain fairly light for most areas. The
most likely area to see persistent gusts to 25 mph will be over
Baca County, where a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for
Monday afternoon and evening. Prowers and Las Animas may needed
to be added as well, but both were too marginal to be included
at this time. On Tuesday, a weak wave passes to our south,
spreading chances for showers, thunderstorms, and slightly
cooler temperatures back across the area. Best chances for
moisture look to stay over and near the mountains at this time.
On Wednesday, a stronger system passes to our north, increasing
westerly downsloping flow over our area. This will mean warmer
than normal highs, with much of the plains shooting back up into
the 80s. We'll also see increased chances for critical fire
weather conditions, especially for the San Luis Valley and the
I-25 corridor.

Thursday Onwards..

The northern plains low sends a cold front across our plains
sometime Wednesday night into Thursday morning, which will help to
cool us back down closer to seasonal norms and bring humidity values
up slightly as well with easterly winds behind the frontal push. At
this time, critical fire weather conditions look to persist over the
San Luis Valley on Thursday, while thunderstorm chances increase
over the plains. Thunderstorm chances increase further for Friday
and Saturday as models bring a low onshore over California. This
system will increase moist southwest flow aloft over Colorado,
helping to improve out chances for snow over the high country, and
rain and thunderstorms over the plains.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Breezy southerly winds of 10 to 20 mph will keep elevated fire
weather conditions in place across the far southeast plains today.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Critical fire weather conditions are expected across the far
southeast plains, with more widespread fire danger possible on
Wednesday, especially over the San Luis Valley and the I-25
corridor. Critical fire weather conditions will again be possible
on Thursday, especially across the interior valleys.

Isolated to scattered showers, and a few possible thunderstorms,
can be expected across the region starting on Monday, increasing
in coverage and intensity late in the work week into next weekend.
