Temperatures remain mild today, with dry weather. A strong
system Thursday night into Friday will bring gusty winds, rain
and along with chance of thunderstorms, and high mountain snow.
Temperatures trend cooler Friday into the weekend, when
afternoon highs fall into the upper 50s to mid 60s by Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...

...WINDY CONDITIONS FRIDAY...

Today: a trough digging south from the Gulf of Alaska will
bring a southwest flow. Combined with higher heights linger over
the area, this will allow for mild day over the Upper Columbia
Basin, Spokane Area, Palouse, and central Idaho areas with high
in 70s and low 80s, roughly 10 degrees normal for this time of
year. Elsewhere, temperatures will be near normal or slightly
above normal. No precipitation is expected until late Thursday
evening.

Thursday night through Sunday: The offshore low continues to
deepen and a strong cold front will push across the Cascades
late tonight into Friday morning, with the upper trough on its
heels. The cold front is forecast to bring the rain, gusty
winds, and chances for afternoon and evening thunderstorms. As
with previous days before, there is still uncertainty around the
forecast details, particularly with winds and where the highest
wind gusts will occur. The deterministic ECMWF has higher wind
gusts across a much broader area than the GFS, and the NBM
75th-25th percentile spread for maximum gust speed is 10 mph
throughout the entire forecast area. High-res models are finally
picking up on the bulk of the event, though, so we will
continue monitoring the event closely in the next few forecast
runs.

A first area of precipitation associated with the cold front
starts in the Cascades this evening. Chances expand into
central WA overnight and early Friday, then into eastern WA and
ID from mid-morning into early afternoon. At the same time, the
incoming upper will bring second other scattered showers over
the Cascades and central WA through the late morning to
afternoon, which will then too migrates into eastern WA and
north ID in the later afternoon to evening. Shower chances
linger around the mountain zones and perhaps far northeast WA
into the overnight, waning into Saturday.

NBM probabilities show a 70 to 90 percent of at least 0.10
inches of rain across the entire forecast area, save for the
deeper basin and L-C valley where rain probabilities are around
40-50%. Areas that will see the highest rainfall include the
Cascades, northern mountains, Idaho Panhandle, which look to
receive a third of an inch or more of rain and isolated rain
totals up to 0.90 inches in the far northern mountains and
Cascades. Snow amounts have stayed similar, with areas 6000-7000
feet and above in the Cascades having a chance to see a couple
inches of snow. Elevations 5000 feet and above look to see under
an inch of snow. Any travelers or hikers anticipating being in
those higher elevations this weekend should pay close attention
to the forecast over the next few days.

Cooling air aloft following the passage of the front support
steep lapse rates (7 deg C/km and above), and SBCAPE values
of 200 J/kg. Combined with the the upper trough forcing, there
are chances for thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening.
Thunderstorm chances between 15-25% are found over the Cascades
through northern mountains, with a 10-15 percent chance over the
northern Columbia Basin into the Spokane area. Possible impacts
will be gusty outflow winds and isolated heavy rainfall.

Winds are shaping up to be the most notable part of the system.
Winds increase with the cold frontal passage Friday, starting
in the morning and peaking in the afternoon to evening (between
11 AM and 8 PM) before gradually waning into the overnight.
Speeds have gotten progressively stronger with each model run.
There remain model uncertainty regarding location and peak wind
strengthen. Regardless, NBM probabilities for peak wind gusts
of 30 mph or greater average around 80 percent from the lee of
the Cascades to WA/ID border. For 40 mph or greater
probabilities are around 70-90% over the Waterville Plateau and
Upper Columbia Basin to the West Plains of Spokane. There is
even 30-50% chance of wind gusts near 50 mph over the Upper
Columbia Basin. Possible impacts include tree limb damage,
airborne objects, difficulty driving especially for high profile
vehicles. Localized power outages could also be seen. Blowing
dust will also be a potential from the lee of the Cascades to
the West Plains of Spokane, south into the deeper Columbia Basin
in the afternoon and evening. This could lead to reduced
visibilities.

Sunday through Tuesday: Temperatures remain slightly below
normal into next week. Sunday and Monday morning may be chilly.
Lows in the low to mid 30s will be possible in sheltered
northern valleys, which brings a frost threat. When looking at
clusters, 80 percent agree on lower heights remaining over the
area through Monday, though there is little agreement in
strength and where the center of the low is. By Tuesday,
confidence for continued lower heights decreases to 60 percent,
overall indicating that unsettled weather may continue into next
week. Overall the forecast looks drier, save for some periods

.AVIATION...
12Z TAFS: VFR conditions are expected with middle and high
cloud decks through this evening, then clouds start to thicken
and lower from the west overnight into early Friday. A chance
for showers will move toward KEAT as rain expands into the
Cascades this evening and start to edge east overnight. Winds
will generally be less than 10kts throughout the period as well,
but we are watching stronger winds heading into the day Friday

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: High confidence
in VFR conditions. Moderate confidence in showers moving into
the KEAT between 08-12Z Friday. If the system moves quicker the
precipitation could move into KMWH overnight and even approach
KGEG by 12Z, but confidence in low in that scenario.
