Persistent snow will bring several days of winter travel
conditions over the mountains this week. We are also monitoring
Wednesday through Friday for heavy mountain snow, strong winds,
and the potential for light lowland snow accumulations in the
northern mountain valleys. Additional moderate snow in the
mountains will be possible into this weekend as well.

PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS THIS WEEK AND
POTENTIAL FOR STRONG WINDS WEDNESDAY EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY...
Tonight and Tuesday: A Gulf of Alaska Low and a strengthening
high off the coast of the California will bring a steady stream
of moisture in the Pacific Northwest. A tightening temperature
gradient between the two systems is supporting a jet streak of
120-140 kt across the Southern Washington/Northern Oregon. The
jet placement is bringing decent divergence across the Cascades
and driving colder air across the region. Models continue to
highlight the Puget Sound Convergence Zone through Tuesday
morning. The NBM 25-75th percentiles show an additional 5-10
inches. The rain shadow effect well keep most of the Inland
Northwest precip free. Precip chances pick back over the Idaho
Panhandle with mountain snow and lowland rain. Lookout Pass has
potential to have 2-4 inches of snow. Winds will be across the
Basin with gusts into the 20-30 range. Overnight lows will be in
the 20s and upper teens. Tomorrows highs will be in the 40s to
low 50s.
Tuesday night through Thursday: The jest streak will move north
through the period and steer profuse moisture into the region.
Precipitable water amounts range for 130-150 percent of normal
across the Basin. The Cascades and Idaho Panhandle range from
170-210 percent. Stevens Pass is expected to get 24 hour snow
totals of 4-8 inches on Tuesday and 1-2 feet for Wednesday and
Thursday. Blewett Pass and lower slopes of the Cascades can
expect light snow of 1-3 inches on Tuesday and 3-6 inches
Wednesday and Thursday. Snow levels will climb above 4000ft
keeping the low elevations generally under a rain to rain
snow/mix. Lowland snow accumulation of at least one inch is But
the West to East flow will keep the chance of rain precip more
than a 0.10 inch low. Models have the Basins best one inch snow
probability around 20 percent over the Palouse. Winds across the
region will also be a concern for Wednesday afternoon into
Thursday morning. 850Mb winds will be in the 45-60 mph range.
Ensembles have pulled back on the winds slightly. Current trends
have the ridges receiving 45-60 mph gusts. The Basin is
expected to get 35-50 mph gusts.
Friday through Tuesday: The pattern begins to shift with a
developing ridge pattern along the coast. The mountain snow will
taper off through the weekend as drier air starts to filter
into the region. Winds will remain breezy with gusts into upper
20s and low 30s during the afternoon hours. Highs will be in the
upper 40s and 50s. Overnight lows will be in the upper 20s and

00Z TAFS: VFR conditions expected at all terminals through the
forecast period. Satellite and radar show snow/rain showers
moving over GEG, SFF, COE, PUW, and LWS and into the Panhandle
through the afternoon. HREF guidance shows these chances for
showers at GEG, SFF, and COE ending around 06Z, but shows
lingering showers for LWS/PUW through 12Z. Visibilities with
these showers could briefly drop visibilities down to 5SM, so
isolated MVFR conditions possible should a shower pass directly
over the terminal. Precipitation type will mostly be snow, but
given colder temperatures aloft and warmer air nearer to the
surface, this snow could melt very quickly. Soundings show
winds decreasing around 01-03Z, and increasing again around
15-18Z. MWH/EAT will see similar trends for wind gusts but are
not expected to see showers.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: High confidence
in VFR conditions through the forecast period except for MVFR
conditions under snow showers. Moderate to high confidence in
timing for winds ending and increasing later in the period. /AS
