A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for northeast NJ, the
Lower Hudson Valley, NYC, Fairfield and Nassau Counties. until 8PM
this evening.
The threat for flash flooding has increased with ongoing Flash
Flood Warnings and heavy showers/thunderstorms currently
entering portions of northeast NJ and NYC.

.KEY MESSAGES...
1) Ongoing threat for flash flooding and severe thunderstorms
through the evening, mainly for northeast NJ, the Lower Hudson
Valley, NYC, Fairfield and Nassau Counties.
2) After another chance of thunderstorms on Friday, a dry and
seasonable forecast for the weekend, with a warming trend early next
week.
3) High risk for rip currents at the Atlantic facing beaches today.

.DISCUSSION...
.KEY MESSAGE 1...
The area remains on the eastern side of upper level troughing
over the east half of CONUS. Shortwave energy rounding the base
of this trough as well as associated surface trough are firing
up showers and thunderstorms, with the strongest/heaviest now
working their way into portions of northeast NJ and NYC.
Deep southwest flow has already increased pwats to around 1.70
inches with guidance showing potential for as high as 1.80 to
2.00 inches. This is near or above the 90th percentile for 8/27
per SPC sounding climo. Additionally MLCAPE has increased to
around 1000-1500 J/kg and with moderate shear (around 30kt of
0-6k bulk shear) will aid in potential for organized storms.
Given current radar and observed mesoanalysis, the threat for
flash flooding and severe weather has increased and is even
ongoing in portions of the area. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch and
Flood Watch continue through this evening for northeast NJ, the
Lower Hudson Valley, NYC, Fairfield and Nassau Counties. It is
also worth noting that 12z HREF now has a PMM 30% area of >3
inches in 3 hours just touching our southwestern areas. This
tends to be a signal for more scattered to widespread flash
flooding. 24 hours PMM QPF from the 12z HREF show about 2 to 3
inches for the NYC/NJ metro area which seems reasonable given
current trends. Isolated amounts up to 4 inches are possible.
Elsewhere in the Watch area, generally 1 to 1.5 inches expected
in thunderstorms with locally higher amounts possible.
Additionally, an isolated tornado or two remains possible for
the Watch area given decent low level curvature of model
hodographs, specifically up to 3km.
.KEY MESSAGE 2...
Cold pool aloft with main cold frontal passage Friday may spark a
few afternoon showers and thunderstorms, especially across southern
CT and and LoHud. Coverage looks isolated and mainly sub severe, at
this point.
Otherwise, mainly zonal flow behind the late week system turns into
weak ridging by late Saturday into Sunday as heights aloft rise.
Skies will clear with northerly flow on Saturday, and dry conditions
lasting into Sunday. Winds turn southerly on Sunday as the sfc high
moves offshore, and dewpoints climb a few degrees relative to
Saturday. Otherwise, near to slightly below normal temperatures both
days, with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Heights continue to
build into early next week, with increasing temperatures. Heat
indices may approach 90F for the urban corridor Monday and Tuesday.
.KEY MESSAGE 3...
Winds increase today out of the S closer to 15-20 kt. This
combined with a building swell of 3-4ft at 5s out of the S/SE
will bring a high risk of rip currents. The risk through much of
the day may end up being moderate for southeast Suffolk, but
high is possible by the late afternoon/evening.

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A frontal system with the associated cold front will continue
to approach. The cold front will slowly move across the region
late in the TAF period.
Numerous showers and thunderstorms are moving into NYC
terminals and KHPN this afternoon. Elsewhere convective coverage
not as much, KBDR and KSWF will have some afternoon into early
evening TSRA. KGON will not see much shower activity within
their TAF period and KISP will see some showers and
thunderstorms this afternoon. As a result, occasional MVFR to
IFR visibilities with showers and thunderstorms can be expected
with otherwise VFR conditions into the evening. Regarding KGON,
expect some MVFR stratus to develop this evening and lower to
IFR late.
Thereafter, shower and thunderstorm activity decreases, but
MVFR to IFR conditions with stratus and fog possible overnight
into early Friday. This is already expected for KGON. Rest of
TAF period otherwise VFR.
Regarding winds, they are generally southerly near 10-15 kt with
gusts near 20-25 kt this afternoon. The winds decrease tonight
to less than 10 kts with directions becoming more variable. A
westerly to northerly wind develops Friday near 5-10 kts but sea
breezes are expected to develop with more southerly switch of
wind.
NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...
Some thunderstorms could produce strong to severe wind gusts up
to 30-50 kt before 00Z.
Outside of thunderstorms, some peak gusts to 30 kts.
Localized IFR to LIFR vsbys potential within heaviest showers
and thunderstorms.

Friday: Mainly VFR. MVFR or lower at times w/SHRA and TSRA,
mainly 18-00Z timeframe.

Southerly flow increases late Wednesday night into Thursday, with
ocean seas getting to around 4 ft and gusts approaching 20 kt.
Otherwise, sub advisory conditions prevail with seas and winds
diminishing for the weekend with a light pressure gradient with high
pressure building across for the weekend.
Rip Currents:
Winds increase today out of the S closer to 15-20 kt. This
