Tonight through Wednesday night:
This evening we will begin to see a system swinging in from the
northwest associated in part with a weak low to the north and
south along a weak cold front. This will be associated with a
fairly strong shortwave aloft as well as at least an initial
burst of WAA in the low to mid levels on the front edge of the
moisture shield and in the nose of a weak LLJ. We may see some
weak banding in southern parts of the CWA with some models
showing weak Fgen in the 700-500mb layer. Thus we expect to get
hit with a fairly quick shot of accumulating snow this evening
through the overnight period perhaps lingering in the southeast
into the daylight hours Wednesday.
While QPF is expected to be fairly light overall with the
southern 2 tiers of the CWA likely seeing anywhere from 0.1-0.25
inches (less further north) but the snow ratios may be in the
17-19:1 range. The ratios are high because it is a cold system
with a deep DGZ and decent forcing within the DGZ. However, it
is not expected to be an extreme high ratio event due to some
strong winds in the upper parts of the DGZ and the fact that
forcing is not crazy strong within the DGZ. In any case, this
event is likely to yield between 2 and 5 inches by Wednesday
morning for the southern 2 tiers of the CWA with less than an
inch for parts of central WI. Highest amounts expected toward
the WI/IL border.
Snow with this system will push all the way out by mid morning
Wednesday but will be quickly followed by another system
swinging down from south central Canada. This will bring a more
pronounced Arctic cold front through the area late during the
day Wednesday through the early evening. This will be a very
quick hitting system last just a few hours but a slug of PVA
aloft with a shortwave and quick hitting strong LLJ/WAA in
addition to the surface front we will very likely a shot of snow
perhaps with decent snow rates at times. While it is brief the
forcing is arguably stronger. However, snow ratios are very
likely to be much lower it is a warmer system and the DGZ is
fairly shallow and breezy within it. Thus ratios should be lower
but at the same time QPF may be a tick higher than currently
forecast though that remains a bit uncertain. In addition, some
CAMs do point to a bit of convective nature to some of the snow
expected with this secondary system and while chances remain low
that represents a higher concern for higher snow rates/QPF and
lowered visibilities. We should expect to grow in confidence in
exactly how this will play out as we get additional data input
but overall between a half inch and 2 inches should be expected
with this secondary shot of snow.
Later Wednesday evening and overnight into Thursday morning with
the frontal passage we will start to usher in a much colder and
drier air mass. Some lingering low level moisture may be enough,
especially as we get colder, to provide us with some light
flurries overnight and especially into Thursday morning.

Thursday through Tuesday:
Predominantly dry and cold conditions are expected throughout this
forecast period. Deep arctic high pressure pushes into Alberta /
Saskatchewan Canada on Thursday, diving into the midwest through
the early half of this weekend, delivering bitter cold
temperatures and wind chills.
The arctic high works with departing low pressure to drive a
westerly breeze across our region Thursday, with daytime highs in
the mid teens. As the high sags further south into the Dakotas
Thursday night (at roughly 1053 mb central pressure, which is very
impressive), it forces a powerful arctic front through our
region, with 30 to 40 below zero wind chills arriving late
Thursday night into Friday morning, caused by air temperatures
bottoming out in the 10 to 20 below zero range and 15 MPH
sustained (25 MPH gust) northwesterly winds. As such, an Extreme
Cold Watch has been issued for the entire region.
Northwest winds continue into Friday, decelerating Friday night
into Saturday. Though wind chills may top out in the 20 to 30
below zero range Friday afternoon (with mostly sunny skies) and
our Extreme Cold criteria is 30 below, we hardly consider this an
improvement, and as such, the Extreme Cold Watch continues all the
way through Saturday morning. Though winds continue to decline
Friday night into Saturday, the combination of continued cold
advection and radiational cooling will allow air temps to drop
several degrees cooler than the prior night, thus extending the
threat of Extreme Cold criteria conditions. Our Friday night thru
Saturday morning wind chill forecast currently bottoms out around
25 to 33 below zero, but we wouldn't be surprised to see this drop
(on account of further radiational cooling) closer to the 30 to 40
below range depending on model trends.
A secondary arctic high (weaker than the first) is progged to
follow in the tracks of the first through the remainder of the
forecast period, keeping temperatures chilly, but likely not as

Snow is expected to spread into the area this evening,
generally over most of the area by 03Z to 04Z Wednesday. The
snow will continue overnight before ending from west to east by
around 12Z Wednesday, perhaps lingering a few more hours in far
southeast WI. Winds will be light during the snow tonight into
early Wednesday morning.
Snowfall rates generally around 0.25-0.5 inch/hr are expected
over most of the area, lower toward Sheboygan/central WI. There
is a heavier west to east area of snow that will set up, with
rates of up to 1 inch/hr across far southern WI, though rates in
this area will for the most parts stay below that. A general 2
to 5 inch snowfall is expected mainly along and south of the
HWY 18 and I-94 corridor, with lower amounts to the north.
Fluffy, powdery snow character is expected.
Ceilings should be in the 800 to 2700 foot AGL range during the
period of snow tonight into early Wednesday morning, with
visibility generally in the 1 to 3 mile range. It may drop to
around 1/2 mile within pockets of heavier snow. Snow will clear
out of southern WI by mid morning with a return to VFR
conditions, if only briefly.
Another round of snow expected late Wednesday afternoon through
the early evening with another half inch up to 2 inches expected
with temporary VSBY reductions in snow to around a half mile
with and another period of at least MVFR CIGS possible.

West to southwest winds will continue tonight as high pressure of
30.6 inches tracks east across the eastern CONUS. Weak low
pressure around 30.0 inches tracks across southern Lake Michigan
Wednesday morning, with westerly winds behind it. Southwest winds
reintensify for a brief period (Wednesday afternoon and evening)
as a more organized low pressure system of 29.7 inches moves
across Lake Superior.
Winds will increase further and shift west to northwest Wednesday
night, as another Arctic cold front crosses Lake Michigan. A few
gale force gusts may occur. Gusty west to northwest winds Thursday
will will turn mainly northwest Friday, as strong high pressure
around 30.9 inches builds into the northern Great Plains. A few
gale force gusts may occur during this period. A Small Craft
Advisory has been issued for these breezy westerly predominant
winds from 21z Wednesday until 0z Saturday.
Arriving Arctic air and elevated wave heights will support
additional periods of moderate to heavy freezing spray
Wednesday night into Friday night. We have also issued a
Freezing Spray Watch from 3z Thursday until 9z Saturday for
elevated Heavy Freezing Spray concerns over the lake, especially
on the eastern side of the lake.
