- A stagnant, predominantly precipitation free pattern will
  prevail through at least mid next week, with seasonably warm
  daytimes inland, and cooler temperatures closer to the lake.

- Hazardous swimming conditions are anticipated at Lake Michigan
  beaches on Saturday, particularly in Illinois.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 248 AM CDT Fri May 29 2026

Beneath the leeward side of an upper level omega block, high
pressure will dominate the Great Lakes region today leading to a
pleasant and warm end to the work week. As the surface high,
centered over lower Michigan early this morning, continues to
pull away from the local area, winds will turn southerly after
daybreak helping temperatures to climb into the middle 80s this
afternoon away from the lake. A lake breeze is expected to
protrude inland beginning late this morning keeping communities
along the lakeshore likely stuck in the upper 60s to lower 70s
today with the coolest conditions anticipated on the IL side of
the lake. Some marginally breezy winds may be found behind the
lake breeze as it progresses inland, otherwise expect generally
light winds today with sunshine filtered by some high level
cloud cover.

This upper blocking pattern looks to hold for several days
which will keep relative high pressure parked over the Great
Lakes well into next week. This will result in a very quiet and
dry stretch of weather through the next week. A second center of
high pressure will drop into the region from the north early
tomorrow bringing slightly cooler, some may say more
comfortable, conditions to the weekend. Highs are progged in the
70s and lower 80s both Saturday and Sunday with notably cooler
conditions forecast toward the lakeshore both days, again with
the coolest conditions expected on the IL side of the lake. So
while it will feel like great beach-going weather inland this
weekend, expect noticeably cooler conditions on Lake Michigan
beaches.

Another word of caution for weekend beachgoers: Breezy onshore
winds will lead to a High Swim Risk with dangerous waves and
currents on Saturday at Illinois Lake Michigan beaches and
generally unfavorable swimming conditions at Indiana beaches.
Due to the anticipated High Swim Risk, a Beach Hazards Statement
will be issued for Saturday and Saturday night for Illinois
Lake Michigan beaches. Less than favorable swimming conditions
may linger into early Sunday as well, particularly in Illinois.

Regular chances for rain are forecast into next week west of
the Mississippi along a stagnant baroclinic zone stirring on the
western fringe of the surface high. Sunday night into Monday,
some medium-range guidance suggests some of this baroclinicity
could meander east and bring scattered rain chances to parts of
western and central IL, but dry conditions are favored around
our CWA. Couldn't argue with the NBM's slight chance PoPs in our
southwest CWA Sunday night. Those will be our only mentionable
PoPs in the forecast for the next week as the blocking pattern
is progged to break and reinforce high pressure around the
region during the middle part of next week. Support for precip
builds toward the end of next week as the high finally looks to
eject out over the Atlantic.

Light/variable to very light NNE winds should gradually trend
out of the S/SSW through Friday morning at the Chicago-area
sites, but wind speeds will remain under 10 kts. A lake breeze
will turn winds out of the NE/E during the afternoon, first at
GYY and then at MDW and shortly thereafter at ORD. At RFD:
largely light/variable winds are expected through today, with
winds eventually turning out of the E in the evening.

VFR with cirrus cloud cover at times will prevail through the
TAF period. THere is a small chance for some light BR towards
daybreak, but impacts and chances both appear too low to warrant
an inclusion in the TAFs at this time.
