...Synopsis...
Amplified upper troughing over the Plains and Upper Midwest is
allowing arctic air and upper synoptic forcing for ascent into
our region. Large lobes of vorticity are advecting southward out
of Manitoba into the Dakotas and Minnesota today into tomorrow
will continue light snow, with continued gusty winds as surface
pressure gradient remains tightened ahead of building surface
high pressure. This will continue to drive blowing snow impacts
today into tomorrow. More details below.
The upper pattern remains rather amplified allowing almost due north-
northwest flow aloft over our region through early next week.
This will allow additional clipper-like systems to swing through
the region while continually tapping into nearby arctic air
mass. One such clipper comes Sunday bringing accumulating snow
between 1-3 inches, gusty winds in excess of 50 mph, and blowing
snow. Blizzard conditions are possible with this system. More
details on this below.
Strong, broad arctic high pressure will move through the Prairie
Provinces and Plains states, helping keep conditions generally
dry, but cold, Monday and Tuesday.
There is some hint in ensembles that start to swing in several
more clipper-type systems mid and late next week. Given how cold
the antecedent conditions will be, these are liable to bring
winter impacts to the region. Location and severity of impacts
remain in question due to variance in ensembles and this
timeframe nearing end of the predictability horizon.
...Blowing snow impacts today and tonight...
Near blizzard conditions continue within the Red River Valley
and eastern North Dakota as widespread blowing snow and light
snow continue. Reports of periodic blizzard conditions in open
country in these areas continue to be observed/received,
including 'No Travel Advisories' in the northern Red River
Valley. Thinking this particular area is partly due to pre-
existing icy roads reported in this area combined with near
blizzard conditions.
Upper trough and its attendant deeper saturation swings through
the area through the rest of today and tonight. Expecting
another resurgence of light snow this evening as vorticity in MB
migrates southward.
Currently gusty winds to 40 mph will persist, and we should see
even a slight uptick in winds within the Red River Valley
tonight. This along with continued light snow, and decreasing
temperatures into the single digits below zero will continue
significant blowing snow impacts. This continues the 40% chance
for blizzard conditions to develop within the eastern Red River
Valley tonight. For this reason, extended the Winter Weather
Advisory through 6AM in eastern ND and northern Red River
Valley.
...Potential blizzard Sunday...
Looking ahead into Sunday, there is a 60% chance for blizzard
conditions to develop within the Red River Valley. With most
ensemble guidance in agreement of a more consolidated synoptic
wave bringing relatively greater forcing compared to today
(including mesoscale forcing via transient frontogensis), we
have a better chance at seeing more snow, generally in the 1-3
inch range, as well as higher winds aloft, including 60kt low
level jet aloft. Ensembles agree in another surge of arctic air
to come with this wave, increasing the pressure gradient as
well as colder temperatures below zero.
This lends credence toward seeing 60% chance for blizzard
conditions. There is still some uncertainty in the amount of
blowable snow that will be available, which is something we may
not be confident in know until sometime tomorrow after the
current blowing snow impacts and falling snow settles. For this
reason, we've issued a Winter Storm Watch for blizzard
conditions within the Red River Valley on Sunday.

Snow and blowing snow are creating near blizzard conditions
within the Red River Valley and eastern North Dakota. This is
causing significantly reduced visibility at times less than
1/2SM. These conditions will linger within the Red River Valley
through at least 12Z. Ceilings are generally MVFR to IFR, and
will remain so through the TAF period. Gusty north- northwest
winds to 25-35kt will persist through at least 06Z, perhaps
increasing to 45kt within the Red River Valley between 00Z-15Z.
