Afternoon heat index values may exceed 105 degrees with overnight heat index values remaining near or above 80 degrees. - Several strong to severe storms are expected in portions of north Georgia this afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rain are all possible. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Friday) Issued at 209 PM EDT Thu Jul 2 2026 High pressure across the eastern CONUS. Upper level ridging continues into the weekend with weak near surface flow out of the E to SE. PoPs remain at or below 30 percent each afternoon across north GA. Thunderstorm chances remain isolated to scattered, as CAPE values in excess of 3000J/Kg fight the suppressive nature of the high. Given the high CAPE values, once a storm gets going (the hard part), a few updrafts may become substantial enough to support wet microbursts and pockets of winds 40-60mph. The hail threat remains relatively low, but not zero, given the warm conditions. Temperatures will be the main threat through the period. Highs in the mid to upper 90s and dewpoints in the 70s will drive heat index values near 105 across north GA. Drier conditions across central GA mean heat indices will likely remain below 105F. A heat advisory has been extended across much of North GA through 8pm Saturday, and an excessive heat warning remains in effect for northwest GA until 8pm tonight (converting to a heat advisory this evening). && .LONG TERM... (Saturday morning through next Wednesday) Issued at 209 PM EDT Thu Jul 2 2026 Independence Day is poised to be unseasonably hot and mostly dry, as the ridging that has supported our multi-day heat wave begins to break down. Isolated thunderstorms are possible -- primarily across far northern and western Georgia along the Alabama state line -- as moisture begins to intrude upon the deteriorating heat dome, but coverage is unlikely to provide much (if any) relief from the lingering heat. Confidence in potentially dangerous heat remains high, and a Heat Advisory has been proactively issued to carry through Saturday evening. Highs areawide will be in the mid- to-upper 90s, with heat index values in the triple digits for all but the terrain of far northeast Georgia. Outdoor activities are a hallmark of the holiday weekend, and with continued oppressive heat, precautions must be taken to lessen likelihood of heated- related illnesses. Ensure that you are taking frequent hydration breaks (in the shade if at all possible), wearing loose, light- colored clothing, and checking in on your people. Apparent/"feels like" temperatures will cross the 90 degree mark by 10AM, and will likely not cross below that threshold until 11PM, meaning it may still be uncomfortably hot even after the sun goes down. Sunday and beyond, mid-level flow becomes more nebulous, with the Southeast broadly situated with the base of troughing to the north and ridging across the Gulf to the south. At the surface, the western periphery of the Bermuda High nudges onshore, allowing dewpoints to surge back into the low-to-mid 70s with moist southwesterly flow off of the Gulf. Chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms will be more numerous through midweek, owing to abundant moisture and lack of intervening/inhibiting subsidence as in previous days. Increased cloud cover correlated to higher PoPs will support air temperatures just a tick lower each day -- generally in the low-to-mid 90s -- however, higher dewpoints will keep heat index values in the triple digits for most through the end of the extended. && .AVIATION...
