AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Overcast conditions along the coast with clear skies
inland are expected through the weekend. A cold front arrives to the
area early next week increasing rain chances and the likelihood for
stronger northwest winds.

&&

.KEY MESSAGES...
- Coastal overcast and clear inland conditions will remain
  through the weekend.

- Light to locally moderate showers are possible Monday through
Tuesday.

- Breezy northwest winds return Monday evening with possible
  gusts to 30-40mph by Tuesday afternoon.

.DISCUSSION...

.SHORT TERM...Slight high pressure aloft will continue through the
weekend. This will result in clear conditions inland and continued
overcast conditions for the coast as the marine layer remain
compressed. Foggy morning for the North Coast will struggle to
scatter out each day for areas directly along the coastline. Inland
high temperatures will be around the high 80s to low 90s through
Sunday. It is crucial to remember that even though the air temps are
becoming hotter, the rivers inland are still TOO COLD FOR SWIMMING.
Cold water shock and/or cold water paralysis are much more likely in
these conditions.

.LONG TERM...A cold front arriving to NW CA Monday will lower
temperatures, promote windy conditions for the entire CWA, and
increase rain chances for Del Norte and Humboldt Counties.
Temperatures will drop through next week bottoming out Tuesday as
inland temp will struggle to break 70F. A warming trend is expected
through the end of the coming week. Rain next week looks to be
slightly variable still as the GFS and ECMWF ensembles both show
slightly different paths for the cold front. This is resulting in a
range of precipitation values between 0.10"-0.25" for the entire
North Coast. Some of the more extreme model outputs shows totals in
Del Norte County up to 0.50-0.80". Along with the potential rain,
winds will rebuild over the area through the coming week. The
forecast calls for gusts between 20-30mph with NBM data showing a 20-
40% chance of exposed ridges reaching 40mph. DS

.AVIATION...LIFR ceilings along coastlines and within coastal river
valleys are expected to continue through the morning. Slight
clearing is expected Sat. midday for the river valleys, yet there is
less forecast confidence for the direct coastline including KCEC and
KACV with IFR to MVFR OVC conditions expected. The Russian River
Valley is showing overcast conditions likely via nighttime satellite
imagery. Southerly winds will continue at KUKI through the night.
Calm winds are expected through the TAF period for inland
terminals. DS

.MARINE...Strong northerly winds finally are beginning to east to
moderate breezes in the coastal waters. Southerly winds are expected
nearshore where fog is expected to be the most thick with M1/4nm
visibility possible early morning. Seas remain elevated through the
day as short period seas lag in decreasing their strength. As high
pressure shifts eastward, the surface pressure gradient relaxes,
lowering winds through the weekend. Seas also continue to subside
this weekend and into early next week.

Winds and seas increase again Monday night through next week as a
weak cold front sweeps over the coastal waters. The forecast for
these winds shows more NW winds instead of the N winds that were
present all last week. Expect these to build substantially through
the week, especially for the southern outer waters where there is an
80-100% probability of gale force winds developing by Tuesday. A NW
swell this weekend will mix with fresh NW short period seas making a
relatively chaotic sea state as combined sea heights build up to
16ft through the coming week. DS
