- Accumulating snow to develop this evening north of Interstate
  80 before ending by sunrise Wednesday. A narrow band of 2-4"+
  is expected along the Highway 20 corridor. Slippery road
  conditions are expected due to cold temperatures.

- An Arctic front may bring a period of strong, gusty snow
  showers Wednesday mid-afternoon into the evening. Periods of
  low visibility in falling and blowing snow, along with a
  refreeze of any moisture on roadways, could lead to hazardous
  travel. There is an outside chance of snow squalls.

- Even colder conditions, including high temperatures below
  zero, are becoming probable Friday and Saturday behind a
  reinforcing cold front Thursday night. Chances of wind chills
  -20 degrees or colder are 60 to 90 area-wide Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

An active wintry pattern will be with us tonight through the day
Wednesday, as two systems approach the area. A broad longwave trough
will remain anchored over the central and eastern CONUS, with a
broad upper-level low over the St. James Bay area of Canada, which
will drive our wintry pattern for the next several days. The first
of the two systems will cross our northern areas this evening
through the overnight hours, leading to a band of accumulating snow.
A 900-825 mb layer band of frontogenesis along a sharp low-level
baroclinic zone will accompany the associated mid-level shortwave,
which will result in a relatively narrow band of snow. The main
question with this band will be the location of the accumulations as
the latest high-res ensembles indicate a southern shift in the axis
of the snow, mainly along the Highway 20 corridor. Any additional
shifting could change the snowfall amounts drastically in some spots
as there could be a tight snowfall gradient on the northern/southern
sides of the band. With the southern shift, I have enough confidence
to add Jackson county, IA and Carroll county, IL in the Winter
Weather Advisory, but as far as the magnitude of the amounts, that
really hasn't changed much, with a range of 2-4 inches (some
isolated higher amounts) expected with the band. The snow, coupled
with AM low temperatures in the lower teens, should result in some
slick spots for the Wednesday AM commute.

Attention then turns to the second of the two systems slated to move
in Wednesday afternoon and evening. A PVA maxima in the mid-levels
will sweep through the area, along with an attendant arctic front.
While snow amounts aren't as much of a concern this time around,
heavier snow showers will be possible, leading to sharply reduced
visibilities at times. Both the NAM and the RAP suggest a sharp 925
mb level FGEN signature, an impressive MSLP rise/fall couplet,
steepening low-level lapse rates, and modestly unstable air mass
with SBCAPE values near 30-70 J/kg. These factors could result in
the threat for snow squalls, so this will be something we will need
to monitor closely. Fortunately, we seem to be lacking the flash
freeze component common with dangerous snow squalls, but with road
temperatures expected to remain below freezing, road surfaces should
become slick. There could also be some blowing and drifting snow as
winds gusting in excess of 30-35 mph are possible.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Wednesday night through Thursday will be a generally calmer period
of weather, with any lingering snow ending Wednesday evening. The
main focus for this period will be on temperatures as a colder air
mass slowly starts to take hold of the area as we remain under the
aforementioned upper-level longwave trough. Wednesday night lows
look to fall to the single digits above zero along and north of
Highway 30, with lower/middle teens to the south. There will be
quite a range of temperatures on Thursday, as highs range in the
upper teens along the Highway 20 corridor to near 30 across our far
south.

For Thursday night through the early part of next week, the focus
will be on a frigid air mass building over the area, likely leading
to the coldest temperatures/wind chills we've experienced yet this
season. An arctic front sweeps through the area Thursday
night/Friday morning, leading to 850 mb temperatures dipping to 23
to 28 degrees C below zero over much of the area by 12z/6 AM Friday
per the GEFS/ECWMF ensembles. Values from these ensembles around -24
to -25 degrees C over the Quad Cities would reach the daily minimum
for DVN on January 23 per the SPC sounding climatology, so we're
talking bitterly cold conditions. The latest LREF ensemble
exceedance probabilities of wind chills -20 degrees F (threshold for
Cold Weather Advisory over most of our CWA) is around 60-90%, along
with chances of -30 degrees F (threshold for Extreme Cold Warning
over most of our CWA) is around 40-80%! Exceedance values this high
gives more than enough confidence for us to have concerns for a
dangerously cold Friday morning, and cold weather headlines will
likely be needed. It does appear that these very cold conditions
will continue into the upcoming weekend, but to what degree remains
uncertain as these exceedance probabilities from the LREF do reduce
a good bit, so uncertainty exists.

As far as precipitation chances are concerned, we're not seeing much
for additional snowfall. A large southern system could give a
glancing blow of snow from the south, but the NBM isn't too excited
for it, with precip chances only around 10-30%, so not much to write
home about.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z THURSDAY/...

Ongoing snow band north of Hwy 30 is impacting KDBQ with MVFR to
IFR conditions. There is potential for a transitory bout of
LIFR attendant to rates of 0.5-1"/hr briefly 06z-08z before
tapering off quickly thereafter. Accumulations of an inch or two
are possible. This band may sag southeast and brush KCID and
KMLI through 10z with a quick bout of MVFR/IFR visibility and
minor accumulations otherwise predominantly VFR rest of tonight,
while KBRL will remain dry and VFR overnight. LLWS mention was
left in at KBRL through 10z with winds of 40+ kt near 2kft agl
from the SW.

Wednesday 12z-18z anticipate predominantly VFR with some MVFR
(ceilings). Winds will shift to W/SW and become gusty at 15-25 kt.
A strong arctic front will sweep through the terminals toward
20z-24z. This may be accompanied by snow showers and transitory
bouts of MVFR conditions, which was handled with PROB30 mention.
Winds will shift to W/NW with a period of sustained winds at
least 20+ kt and gusts 30-35+ kt, but there is a signal in some
of the guidance for a brief bout of gusts 40-45+ kt although
there is uncertainty in the mixing depth. Nonetheless, the gusty
winds will likely lead to some bouts of greatly reduced
visibility in blowing snow, primarily at KDBQ where fresh powdery
snow will be more readily lofted.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect tonight for areas
along the Highway 20 corridor in eastern Iowa and northern
Illinois, with a slight expansion to include Jackson county in
Iowa and Carroll county in Illinois. Snow is expected this
evening into the overnight before tapering off prior to sunrise
on Wednesday, with 2 to 4 inches likely. Locally higher amounts
are possible near the Wisconsin border. Snow covered and slippery
roads are expected. There will likely be a sharp cutoff on snow
amounts to the south with an inch or less of snow from Highway 30
to near Interstate 80.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY

Another Arctic cold front will push through the area Wednesday
afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for strong, gusty
snow showers. Any accumulations look to be under an inch. These
snow showers may impact travel with significant reductions in
visibility for short periods of time.

Following the snow showers, strong wind gusts to 40 mph may
persist for several hours Wednesday night leading to areas of
blowing and drifting snow, with significant visibility reductions,
particularly north of Highway 30.

Bitter cold weather will set in from late Thursday through Saturday.
Temperatures will fall below zero, with dangerous wind chills
likely at times.
