The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a Red Flag
Warning, which is in effect from 9 AM this morning to 6 PM MDT
this evening. 

* WIND... WIND GUSTS BETWEEN 35 AND 55 MPH IN THE AFTERNOON

* HUMIDITY... BETWEEN 13 AND 20 PERCENT

* IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. 
  Outdoor burning is not recommended.

* ADDITIONAL INFO...Fire weather zone 430 has been added back into
  the Red Flag Warning due to increased confidence on low
  afternoon humidity and very gusty winds. The lingering snowpack
  melted, increasing fire weather concerns today.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can

.KEY MESSAGES...

- High Wind Warnings continue for the typical prone areas of
  southeast Wyoming. High Wind Watch issued for areas adjacent
  to the Northern Laramie Range.

- Seasonably mild or warm temperatures today, and near record
  warmth possible for far eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska
  tomorrow. Fire Weather Watch issued for the same areas for
  tomorrow.

- The probability for a significant and widespread wind event on
  Thursday and/or Friday continues to increase.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 332 AM MDT Sun Mar 8 2026

Synopsis... The forecast area lies in broad northwest flow aloft as
the large Western US upper ridge flattens. The core of the northern
stream lies near the US/Canada border and is drifting south toward
the central Rockies. A rather deep cut off low spins along the Baja
CA coast. Toward the surface, a broad high stretches across the
Intermountain West. The primary low remains in Canada, but it drags
a front across the northern tier of the US. A high wind event is
underway in the usual prone areas of Arlington and Bordeaux with
gusts around 60 mph continuing through the night. Snowpack has
really melted off across southeast Wyo as well, indicated by the
measurements dropping from 3" to T at WFO CYS.

Today and tonight... Made no change to the High Wind Warning
effective all day today for zones 106, 110, 116, 117 as wind speeds
should only increase heading into the daylight hours. Issued a High
Wind Watch for zones 101 and 107 (Niobrara and E. Platte cos.) as
some of the stronger gusts could spill further off the Northern
Laramie Range. All the parameters are lining up for a textbook wind
event today, shown by a steep surface pressure gradient (16mb across
the state), a pocket of strong subsidence in the mid levels, and
downsloping west winds. Would not be surprised to see some 75+ mph
gusts around Bordeaux. At this time, thinking the high gusts for the
southern Laramie Range should remain tied to the foothills. In-house
wind modeling caps the probability to 30% for Cheyenne proper, and
most guidance suggests 40-50 mph gusts. Downslope flow will also aid
in seasonably mild to warm temperatures for the eastern half of the
CWA this afternoon. A notable H85 thermal ridge also jets up the
High Plains, with temps around 16C in the Neb panhandle. Given highs
reached the upper 50s to around 60F Saturday and substantial
snowmelt, felt the forecast bump of 10 degrees for today seemed
reasonable. Will mention elevated fire weather concerns due to the
wind and warm temps, but think the recently melted snow will keep RH
above critical thresholds. Winds refuse to quit tonight, which will
result in very mild lows across the WY plains and northern NE
panhandle (mid/upper 40s). Environmental drying should accelerate
and humidity recovery will be very limited overnight, leading to
increased fire concerns.

Tomorrow... The jet stream dips into the northern Rockies while a
shortwave lines up to cross the state. Meanwhile, a surface low
begins sliding down the lee of the Rockies, reaching the Wyo Black
Hills by the afternoon. Ahead of this setup, strong westerly
downslope winds continue still and temperatures warm even further.
The High Wind Warning for the prone areas lasts throughout the day
and is set to expire at 00z as the mid-level subsidence and surface
pressure gradient both relax. As for highs, the middle of the NBM
envelope suggests mid/upper 60s for Wyo east of I-25 and lower/mid
70s for the western Neb panhandle. For reference, those are roughly
20 degrees above normal and right near daily record values. Humidity
values will indeed approach or surpass critical levels, prompting a
Fire Weather Watch for the far eastern WY and western NE zones.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Issued at 1234 PM MST Sat Mar 7 2026

Following the warm, dry, and breezy weather on Monday, attention
will turn to an approaching cold front from the north on
Tuesday. Recent ensemble guidance has trended a bit slower with
the progression of this cold front, and it may end up remaining
just off to the north in northeast Wyoming throughout most of
the day on Tuesday. Still, increasing RH values above 500mb will
result in a much cloudier day on Tuesday and mid-level
temperatures will start to drop ahead of the approaching trough.
These factors combined will result in lower afternoon highs on
Tuesday by around 10 degrees.

The cold front will pass through southeast Wyoming and western
Nebraska later on Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening
bringing a sharp drop in surface temperatures as well as the
chance for a few rain showers quickly turning to snow showers.
Ensemble mean QPF values remain quite low with this system,
likely remaining less than 0.1" or so for most locations. The
northern Laramie Range may see around 1-3 inches of snow from
this event given favorable northerly upslope, but no snow
accumulations of note are expected outside of this area on
Tuesday.

Following the departure of this frontal system, expect fast
westerly flow to return to southeast Wyoming as another strong
gradient-driven high wind event moves in. Even at the day 5-7
range, pattern recognition and local-in-house guidance is
showing very high confidence in 60mph+ winds over both the I-80
and I-25 travel corridors in southeast Wyoming from Wednesday
evening through Friday of next week. High-confidence also exists
in above-normal temperatures given a developing ridge over the
southwestern CONUS. By the end of the week, forecast confidence
decreases somewhat as some ensemble groups favor a southward
trend in the jet bringing clouds and precipitation back to the
mountains, and other ensemble groups keep the storm track
farther north.

VFR conditions will dominate at all terminals today and on
Monday. Expect gusty afternoon winds through the day today. As
surface winds decrease after sunset, wind shear will be present
at all terminals from Laramie eastward through the Nebraska
Panhandle with strong flow aloft overnight. Another day of gusty
westerly winds is expected on Monday.
