  producing near record high temperatures for Sunday.

- Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are expected
  Sunday and Monday.

- Some relief of the heat is possible during the middle of next
  week as a Canadian cold front moves towards the Front Range.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 101 AM MDT Sun Aug 2 2026

The main weather headline for Sunday will be a dominate ridge,
bringing benign weather along with soaring temperatures. So for
today, expect highs to flirt with records highs, possibly all-
time records such in Chadron with downsloping winds off of Pine
Ridge. Most of the temperatures across the area are at or near
the 99th percentile and/or all time maximum high temperatures.
We are expecting the hottest temperatures to occur in Sioux,
Dawes and, Box Butte Counties in the Nebraska Panhandle where
highs top out in the low to mid 100s. Here in Cheyenne and
across eastern Wyoming, highs will climb into the upper 90s to
low 100s. With these forecast high temperatures and dry air, a
Heat Advisory has been issued for a good portion of the CWA
during the afternoon hours on Sunday. The other thing that we
are monitoring with the southerly winds across the Nebraska
Panhandle are the increased fire weather concerns as min RH
values dip to and below 10 percent. Therefore, Red Flag Warnings
are in effect for this afternoon across the Nebraska Panhandle
while a two-day Red Flag Warning is out for our far western fire
zones of Carbon County as there will be poor overnight RH
recovery. Hi-res guidance continues to indicate a very low risk
of a shower or two coming off of the mountains this afternoon,
but with the current state of the environment, these showers
will be nothing more than VIRGA and only produce gusty winds at
the surface.

Some changes are in store at the start of the work week as the ridge
that dominated weather over the weekend pushes off to the east,
allowing a cold front to dive south across the region by Monday
afternoon. This will bring a cooler air mass which allows
temperatures to tank ever so slightly from the day prior. Many
locations west of the I-25 corridor will see highs top out in the
mid to upper 80s while highs to the east top out in the low to mid
90s. The other thing of note will be the possibility of gusty winds
Monday as the surface gradient tightens, so expect gusts up to 30
mph for many location across southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska
Panhandle. Due to these gusty conditions coupled with dry fuels and
ongoing lack of widespread precipitation, elevated fire weather
concerns will continue into Monday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Issued at 101 AM MDT Sun Aug 2 2026

Will keep this long term discussion short a sweet as there is not
much to talk about with the synoptic set-up that will take hold over
the region. Starting off the long term period, Tuesday marks a day
that we get a shot of cooler air as an upper-level trough digs
south. This will allow a surge of cooler air to infiltrate the CWA,
resulting in highs only topping out in the mid to upper 70s. A nice
break from the relentless heat that we have been experiencing. But,
don't get to excited with a cooler day and if it will continue, this
is short-lived as we begin to heat right back up mid-week as ridging
begins to build back into the region. As ridging takes a hold, we
will remain dry with heat building into Thursday as highs will top
out in 90s east of the I-25 corridor and mid to upper 80s to the
west. The trend heading into next weekend continues as the ridge
becomes well established, we look to remain dry and hot. Possibly
breaking more temperature records, so stay tuned...

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z MONDAY/...
Issued at 1128 AM MDT Sun Aug 2 2026

VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF period. Another hot and
dry day is expected across SE Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle
with a few high-based cumulus along with some high clouds aoa 20
kft. The main hazard these next 24 hours will be gusty winds,
primarily for the Nebraska terminals after 02Z thanks to the onset
of a 40-45 knot SE low-level jet, which will gradually veer to SW
throughout the night as the boundary layer decouples and we continue
to stabilize. Added the mention of low-level wind shear around 2 kft
at KCDR, KBFF, and KAIA to account for this. Confidence in LLWS is
lower at KSNY so did not include in the TAFs at this time.
Otherwise, expect prevailing southerly flow at the surface before a
cold front moves through the area around 14Z Monday, which will
shift the winds out of the northwest.
