700mb temperatures remain about -25C through this evening. As the
upper level trough pushes through the Intermountain West 700mb
temperatures will gradually rise from the North to the South. Winds
are expected to turn westerly behind the trough and a nocturnal
700mb jet starts to develop. Strong subsident flow also develops
elevating the winds early Monday morning. The Craig to Casper
gradient starts to exceed 70meters around 09z on Monday with the GFS
omega fields showing maxed out subsident flow values by 12z. Around
that time the 700mb jet floats between 55 and 65knots. By 21z the
Southeast Wyoming wind prone areas should see the strongest winds at
around 65-70kts at 700mb. This should roughly translate to 70 to 75
mph wind gusts for our wind prone areas. The high wind watch was
upgraded to a high wind warning starting at 06z and ending around
12z Tuesday. Our winds look to slowly calm down after 06z Tuesday
but with the stronger subsident flow lasting until 12z Tuesday the
original timing was kept.
Surface temperatures looked to have peaked this morning with the
warm air advection pushing through Southeast Wyoming and the
Nebraska Panhandle. On top of slightly rising surface temperatures
this warm air advection provided the slightly more lift we needed
for the stratiform snow to develop. The snow is expected to last
through the afternoon as it slowly moves south. Almost of the Hi-res
guidance has the snow ending around 01-02z Monday or this evening
with some potential lingering showers near the southern periphery of
our forecast area. The evening and overnight period gets tricky with
temperatures. With mostly clear skies behind the snow showers.
Temperatures will really plummet with optimal radiational cooling
and the fresh fallen snow keeping the area rather cold. However,
once our winds turn predominantly westerly and the winds start to
kick up. Those surface temperatures will really start to climb as
warm downsloping takes over. Minimum temperatures for tonight look
to reach slightly into the negatives with a couple places possibly
reaching zero degrees but then should climb in to the 30's and
possibly 40's for Monday's highs. With the wind chills potentially
reaching between -15 to -25 tonight before the winds kick-in the

At the start of the long term period, the synoptic pattern is
dominated by a ridge up the West Coast and a deep trough across the
Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. As we progress through the
forecast period, the ridge slides into our CWA while the trough
pushes ever so slightly to the east. So, expect a relatively benign
week. An embedded shortwave dives south into our area Wednesday,
which may bring an uptick in surface winds, especially in our wind
prones across southeast Wyoming. However, most locations will remain
below the high wind threshold with Arlington having the best chance
with probabilities between 60-80%. Thereafter, ridging quickly
builds back in and controls weather conditions across the region to
round out the extended. With dry conditions, what about
temperatures, will any additional cold surges make into our CWA?
Well, the wintertime temperatures that we had this weekend will be a
distant memory by Tuesday with temperatures soaring back to near or
just above normal. Progressing through the work week, 700mb temps
warm into next weekend as highs will soar into the mid 40s to mid
50s across the CWA. But first, at the start of this forecast period
highs are expected to top out in the mid 30s west of I-25 and low to
mid 40s east of the corridor, highs increasing ever so slightly
through the work week. Low temps will reflect a similar pattern,
increasing nightly, with Tuesday night lows dipping into the teens
and by next weekend, only bottoming out in the low to mid 20s.

Remaining snow showers will clear out quickly over the next hour
or so, with skies trending clear after. Winds will turn to the
southwest this evening, and strengthen late at RWL. A few gusts
may reach LAR and CYS overnight too. There is about a 10-20%
chance for some shallow fog to develop at any terminal except
RWL overnight, but confidence was too low to add to the TAF at
this time.
Look for widespread gusty winds on Monday. Wyoming terminals can
expect gusts between 40 and 50 knots, while Nebraska terminals
can expect gusts between 30 and 40 knots.
