.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet and dry conditions will continue across the Central and
Eastern Interior today outside of very isolated showers, as a
cold front tracking southeast across the North Slope and Brooks
Range into the Northwest Interior works to bring rain/snow
chances. High pressure building in out of the west today into
Thursday will lead to clearer skies and drier conditions, with
attention turning to a strong low pressure system in the Bering
Sea. This system is expected to bring widespread rain and gusty
winds to Western Alaska Thursday into Friday, as it wraps in
tropical moisture from remnants of Typhoon Dujuan. In addition,
strong southerly gap winds are expected through the Alaska Range
passes late Thursday through Saturday.

.KEY MESSAGES...

Central and Eastern Interior...

- Quiet and dry conditions will continue today, outside of very
  isolated rain/snow showers favoring higher elevations. Highs
  today will be in the 40s, with overnight lows tonight in the
  20s to low 30s.

- High pressure building in Thursday into Friday will lead to
  drier and sunnier conditions, as afternoon highs climb to the
  mid 40s to mid 50s to finish the week. Overnight lows will
  remain cooler with clearer skies, holding in the 20s and 30s.

- As a strong storm in the Bering Sea interacts with the ridge
  of high pressure over the Interior, gusty winds are expected
  to develop through the Alaska Range passes late Thursday into
  Friday and Saturday. A High Wind Watch remains in effect here
  for southerly wind gusts up to 70 mph.

- Conditions will remain predominantly dry through the weekend,
  as precipitation chances remain focused farther west and in
  the Alaska Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...

- A cold front working southeast out of the Chukchi Sea into
  Northwest Alaska today will support rain/snow showers across
  the West Coast and Northwest Interior.

- High pressure building in out of the west today will lead to
  warmer and drier conditions.

- A strong storm remains on track to move into the Eastern
  Bering Sea Wednesday night into Thursday, with widespread rain
  and gusty winds building into Southwest Alaska throughout the
  day Thursday.

- Gusty winds Thursday/Friday will be out of the east/southeast,
  with strongest wind gusts around 40 to 60 mph along the West
  Coast and 30 to 40 mph across the Western Interior. Strongest
  winds are expected to remain offshore, at St. Lawrence Island,
  and southeast of the Yukon Delta region.

- Coastal concerns with this storm will remain low, with minor
  water level rises expected along the West Coast as the bulk of
  strongest winds are expected to be primarily offshore out of
  the east/southeast. Water level rises are expected to be up to
  as high as 1 to 2 feet above the normal highest high tide.
  across the West Coast.

- Daily rain chances will then continue through the weekend, as
  highs remain in the 40s to mid 50s with lows in the 30s/40s.

North Slope and Brooks Range...

- The back end of a cold front will continue to work through the
  Brooks Range and Eastern North Slope today with light snow, as
  snow showers fill in behind the front.

- Additional snow accumulations around a T-2" will be focused
  across the Southern Arctic Plains, Brooks Range, and Eastern
  Arctic Coast, with locally higher amounts above pass level.

- Highs through Thursday will be in the 20s/30s, with lows in
  the teens and 20s.

- Drier conditions are then expected to return Thursday onwards
  through the weekend, as temperatures trend slightly warmer.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday Night.
Early morning satellite imagery shows a 535 dam H5 low in the
Gulf of Alaska, a 486 dam H5 low centered in the High Arctic up
around 80N, and a 527 dam H5 low centered over Eastern Siberia.
These lows will be the drivers of our weather pattern to finish
out the week, with high pressure in between all of these
systems. That H5 low in the High Arctic brought a strong cold
front to the North Slope yesterday with gusts upwards of 40 to
55 mph, with moisture on the back end of the front leading to
continued rain/snow chances across the Northern Interior and
North Slope/Brooks Range today into tonight. The weather pattern
will become sharply divided in the coming days as a drying
trend sets in for the North Slope and Central/Eastern Interior,
while a wet and windy pattern arrives into Western Alaska.

High pressure building into Western Alaska today will shift
east across the Interior and North Slope Thursday into Friday.
This will bring overall drier conditions and warmer afternoon
highs, with cooler overnight lows given clearer skies. West of
this ridge of high pressure, a strengthening low will continue
track east across the Bering Sea as remnants of Typhoon Dujuan
also track east, with the main circulation staying south of the
Aleutians. As the storm in the Bering Sea intensifies today into
Thursday, it will begin to wrap in moisture from remnants of
Dujuan while it continues its progression east towards Western
Alaska. The storm at its strongest, is expected to see a central
pressure down around 955 to 965 mb near St. Paul, before
gradually weakening as it shifts east. The latest ensemble and
deterministic guidance continues to favor the low center
tracking east Thursday into Friday, making landfall around
Bristol Bay north to the Y-K Delta over the weekend. With this
southerly track, we are expecting to see the bulk of highest
impacts stay south. Strongest winds and heaviest rain potential
will stay south of and including the Southern Bering Peninsula,
as the bulk of tropical moisture remains focused across
Southwest/Southcentral Alaska.

Winds will steadily ramp up along the West Coast and Western
Interior tonight into Thursday out of the east/southeast.
Strongest wind gusts will remain focused along the West Coast
with gusts to around 40 to 60 mph, with gusts to around 30 to 40
mph across the Western Interior. High Wind Watches also remain
in effect for the Alaska Range passes late Thursday through
Saturday as we see a strengthening pressure gradient between the
high pressure over the Interior and low pressure system in the
Bering. Wind gusts here could peak out of the south around 60 to
70 mph.

Precipitation will arrive in the form of widespread moderate
rain along a strong warm front to Southwest Alaska up to the Y-K
Delta throughout the day Thursday, shifting northeast and
farther inland late Thursday into Thursday night and Friday. A
secondary, weaker low will phase into the backside of this
system Friday into the weekend, helping to keep light rain
chances going across the West Coast and Western Interior as the
remainder of Northern Alaska remains predominantly dry and
warmer. Drier air wrapped into this storm will lead to breaks in
the rain and stronger winds at times. Latest ECMWF/GFS
ensembles show the bulk of rainfall Thursday through Saturday
around 0.25 to 0.75 inches across the Norton Sound south along
the West Coast and in the Southwest Interior, with locally
higher totals possible.

With high pressure and southerly flow firmly in place over the
Interior Thursday into the weekend, temperatures will see a
warming trend as highs climb to the low to mid 50s. This could
potentially be the last period of mid to upper 50s for 2026 of
the season, as temperatures are expected to trend colder next
week as we head towards early October.

.COASTAL HAZARD POTENTIAL...
As a strong low in the Bering Sea moves east towards Western
Alaska Thursday into Friday, widespread rain and gusty winds are
expected to build into Southwest Alaska. The strongest winds
along the West Coast are expected to remain east/southeast,
keeping the bulk of of strongest winds as offshore flow. This
setup will lead to minor coastal concerns, with water level
rises expected to be up to as high as 1 to 2 feet above the
normal highest high tide across the West Coast. We will
continue to monitor this system closely and keep you updated.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Wednesday.
The decaying Bering Sea low will continue to shift inland early
in the period, increasing chances for precipitation across the
North Slope Sunday night into Monday. Precipitation will fall
mainly as snow. Meanwhile, the Central and Eastern Interior will
remain mostly dry as afternoon highs reach into the upper 40s
to mid 50s and overnight lows fall into the mid 30s to lower
40s. As the Bering Sea low pushes inland and weakens over the
state, isolated to scattered rain chances will spread across the
Interior Sunday, with additional precipitation chances
increasing across the region into early next week. Strong
southerly gap winds through the Alaska Range passes will
gradually subside Sunday morning as the pressure gradient
weakens and winds remain breezy along the West Coast. Overall,
drier and cooler conditions will take hold across Northern
Alaska by Tuesday behind the departing system, with Interior
highs cooling into the upper 40s and overnight lows dropping
into the mid 30s. As ridging builds in the Bering Sea early next
week, a broad troughing pattern over the state will work to
bring cooler weather.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Outside of isolated showers favoring the higher terrain today,
predominantly dry conditions will continue across the Upper
Tanana Valley and Fortymile Country through the weekend.
Afternoon highs will see a cooling trend today, ahead of high
pressure building in Thursday onwards leading to warmer highs.
Lows will remain on the cooler side in the 20s for most, with
excellent overnight recovery. MinRHs today will be around
45-55%, dropping to 35-45% Thursday through Sunday. Winds in the
Upper Tanana Valley will remain predominantly out of the
northwest today, shifting to the southeast Thursday through the
weekend.
