Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Another relatively quiet day across Northern Alaska today before
big changes come over the next several days. For the rest of
today, a weak frontal boundary is bringing snow showers to the
eastern interior while additional snow showers continue along the
northeast Arctic coast. A much colder airmass arrives tomorrow
from the northeast, plummeting temperatures well below zero once
again for the majority of the interior and North Slope. Widespread
double digit below zero temperatures reaching down to around -20F
to -45F are expected to build in regionwide early next week with
even colder wind chills at times. Strong northerly gap winds
develop over the state Sunday through the middle of next week,
with the strongest winds expected across higher elevations and the
West/Arctic Coast. High Wind Warnings have already been posted
for St Lawrence Island and Diomede where an extended stretch of
high winds with gusts over 60 mph is expected to last through
Wednesday. Near blizzard conditions also possible at times for the
Northeast Arctic coast early next week with numerous rounds of
light snow and strong winds over 50 mph at times.

.KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...

- Light snow showers continue to push southward along a frontal
  boundary in the Eastern Interior. Any accumulations should be
  minor.

- Coldest valleys across the Interior will drop to -15F to -30F,
  trending lower Monday and Tuesday to around -20F to -45F with
  even colder wind chills.

- Light snow chances will continue for the Upper Tanana Valley
  into early next week, with those chances expanding regionwide on
  Wednesday as gusty winds and warmer temperatures build into the
  Interior.

West Coast and Western Interior...

- Northeast winds increase Sunday into Monday, supporting the
  return of widespread subzero temperatures. Coldest locations are
  expected to drop to around -15F to -40F through midweek with
  even colder wind chills.

- Wind gusts of 30-60 mph will become widespread along the West
  Coast early next week, with highest gusts offshore and at St.
  Lawrence Island. Winds are expected to remain elevated through
  midweek.

- High Wind Warning issued for St Lawrence Island and Diomede
  Sunday through Wednesday next week for a prolonged high wind
  event with frequent gusts to 60 mph and sustained winds over
  30-45 mph.

North Slope and Brooks Range...

- Light snow and wind gusts of 30-40 mph continues across the
  Eastern North Slope/Brooks Range. Period of near blizzard
  conditions possible Monday for the Northeast Arctic Coast.

- Significantly colder airmass builds in supporting the return of
  widespread double digit below temperatures starting Sunday.
  Coldest locations are expected to drop to around -20F to -50F.

- Cold Weather Advisory issued for portions of the Dalton Highway
  and Brooks Range Passes early next week for wind chills as low
  as -65 degrees.

- Gusty winds northerly winds increase through the Brooks Range
  Sunday, expanding further west along the Arctic Coast early to
  midweek with gusts around 30-50 mph.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...

A significant pattern change is on the way for all of Northern
Alaska over the next several days. Upper ridging and high pressure
hold on for one more day across the region before an arctic trough
drops southwestward from NW Canada and the high arctic into the
state. The incoming arctic front has already rounded the top of
the ridge and is making its way southward through the eastern
Interior today, bringing periods of snow showers to that portion
of the state. Fairbanks has largely been on the dry side as snow
along the front has not been able to overcome deeper low level dry
air, as seen on local sounding data. The Fairbanks 00z sounding
shows quite a bit of low to mid level saturation, especially
within the DGZ aloft; however as of 00z, the majority of the
precipitation has since passed to the south and east. The best
forcing for ascent and snow showers remains just east of Fairbanks
through this evening. Expect snow shower activity to continue
southward into the Upper Tanana Valley tonight and tomorrow
keeping the chance for snow in that area over the next 24 hours at
least. Minor accumulations possible from this snow shower
activity.

The well advertised pattern change is underway Sunday as the
aforementioned upper polar low begins diving southward into the
state, and pushing any remaining ridging off to the northwest
into Siberia. A 1050mb+ surface high sets up over the high arctic
and Siberia, while a polar surface low nears the northeast arctic
coast and another low pressure sets up in the north Pacific. This
sets the stage for a strong northeasterly outflow event across
most of Northern Alaska beginning Sunday and persisting into the
middle of next week. Strong cold air advection causes 850mb
temperatures to plummet quickly over the next 24 hours into the
minus 20 to 30 range over the North Slope, with that same airmass
filtering south of the Brooks range into early next week. By
Monday, sub zero high temperatures engulf the majority of the
region. High Wind Warnings have already been issued for St.
Lawrence Island and Diomede Sunday through Wednesday as a
prolonged high wind event sets along the west Coast and in the
Bering due to the very tight pressure gradient between systems.
Cold weather advisories have also been issued for portions of the
Dalton Highway and Eastern Brooks Range as northerly gap winds
combined with surface temperatures in the -20 to -50 range result
in wind chill values as low as -65 to potentially -70 degrees.
Elsewhere throughout Northern Alaska, winds increase through most
north-south oriented passes, with the strongest winds Monday and
Tuesday. Additional wind and cold weather products will likely be
needed in future forecast issuance as confidence increases on
exact locations that could see high winds, extreme cold
temperatures, or both. The one positive about this upcoming
weather pattern is that it is progressive and only expected to
last a few days before southerly flow and relatively warmer air
takes back over by mid to end of next week.

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...

Active weather continues into the extended across all of Northern
Alaska as an upper polar low traverses the state and moves off
into the Bering Wednesday through the end of next week. As the
polar low heads west, the next pattern change begins as southeasterly
flow sets up across Eastern Alaska bringing increased moisture and
warmer temperatures back northward. The arctic airmass quickly
retreats into Siberia with a significant increase in 850 mb and
low level temperatures, aided by downsloping off the Alaska range.
During this time, numerous systems work there way into the Gulf
of Alaska, sending waves of energy northwestward into the
interior. Expect an increase in snow shower activity each day
beginning Wednesday through end of the week. Downsloping off the
Alaska range will likely keep areas just north of there, including
Fairbanks, fairly dry with the most widespread snow showers in
higher elevations and throughout the Central Interior. Max
temperatures rise above zero for many locations by the end of the
week with larger diurnal ranges and sub zero lows as clearer skies
at night allow for good radiational cooling.
