.SYNOPSIS...
The heaviest snowfall has concluded across much of the state as
the low continues to shift east. Snow showers will continue to
fall over much of the Interior as energy remnants continue to
linger, along with high relative humidity values. Strong north
winds will continue through much of the day across the West Coast.
This will provide the Bering Strait with occasional ground
blizzard conditions. Another system will move south from the
Chukchi and progress east across the North Slope coast. This will
provide scattered snow showers and increased westerly winds by the
end of the weekend. The main low will set up just off the NE
Arctic Coast, providing a potential for stronger winds across the
NE Arctic Coast. This may result in occasional periods of reduced
visibilities and potential blizzard conditions.

.KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...
- Cloudy skies continue as a low pressure system moves into
Southcentral, supporting widespread accumulating snowfall
through this afternoon. Showers will become more isolated by
late tonight for most of the Interior.
- Winds will slowly weaken throughout the day as the surface low
continues to push east over northeast portions of the Gulf.
- An additional 1-2" can be expected across much of the Interior
through the end of the weekend.
- Colder temperature are looking to return mid week as skies
clear and drier conditions return.
West Coast and Western Interior...
- Winds will continue to be elevated from the NW Arctic Coast to
the Bering Strait, with gusts up to around 50 mph, through the
rest of today. Otherwise, cold and dry conditions persist.
Associated with the strongest winds, areas of blowing snow could
lead to localized blizzard conditions at times.
- Snow showers will also continue across the YK-Delta and Western
Interior throughout today, becoming more isolated by late
tonight.
- Warmer temperatures will accompany the increased cloud cover and
widespread snowfall across the Western Interior through
Saturday, as conditions remain cold and dry further north and
west.
North Slope and Brooks Range..
- Cold and mostly dry conditions will continue through the
weekend, with isolated snow showers possible at times as areas
of low stratus persist.
- Northerly winds have ramped up along the NW Arctic Coast, and
are expected to remain elevated through tonight. Gusty winds
could lead to areas of blowing snow at times, especially further
west and in the Brooks Range.
- Westerly winds will pick up again with an additional system
progressing east, across the Arctic Coast. This may result in
sustained winds in excess of 35 mph and occasional blizzard
conditions. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the NE
Arctic, starting Sunday afternoon.
- Conditions will remain cold into early next week, with
temperatures reaching down into the 20s and 30s below zero.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...
The forecast continues to remain on track with the front
continuing to move north from the Alaska Range. The associated
upper-level low, currently over the Kuskokwim/YK-Delta, will
continue to push east as a ridge begins to build up in the Bering.
A stream of energy extends from this main low, up the West Coast,
and across the North Slope. As the low in the gulf shifts east,
this band of energy will push SE. This, along with remnants from
the previous front, will continue to provide overcast clouds and
isolated snow showers into the start of the week.
Looking over the Chukchi, a separate low will move E/SE across the
North Slope coast to the NE Arctic Coast, slightly intensifying
as it progresses. This will provide a westerly gradient across
much of the North Slope by the start of the week. There is some
variation in the amongst models in the position of this low by
Monday afternoon as some of them have it farther to the east, such
as the GFS and ECMWF. In addition, this low will help bring down
another cold, Arctic airmass across the state and allow the cold
temperatures to return. However, the coldest temperatures won't
be until around Tuesday.
This low over the NE Arctic will work in tandem with the ridge
over the Bering to continue to feed a stream of energy, with a N-S
orientation, over the West Coast. This will continue to provide
energy across much of the state to help continue to support the
scattered snow showers and patchy clouds.

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...
The ECMWF and GFS are in agreement with the trajectory of the low
that was previously over the NE Arctic Coast. These models have it
progressing eastward, while the Canadian shows it getting embedded
in the northerly flow with the stream of energy over the West
Coast and shifting SW toward the YK-Delta. Despite these
differences, all of the models are showing a positively tilted
ridge building in from the NW. This is showing the potential to
push a lot of the moisture and energy out of the Interior and
allow the minimum temperatures, in the minus 30s, to return by
Wednesday morning. Over the Bering, the ridge will continue to
hold its strength, allowing for a series of shortwaves to
potentially push SE from Siberia and progress across the state.
These waves will provide another round of snowfall and isolated
areas of increased winds across the West Coast. In additions,
this will allow for broad troughing to return across the state,
keeping the cold snap relatively short.
