.SYNOPSIS...Low pressure passing across the southern Great Basin
today will keep unsettled weather across the region, with gusty
winds and a few showers lingering in areas north of Las Vegas this
afternoon. Quieter conditions can be expected tonight and
tomorrow into before a second storm system brings more widespread
precipitation to the area during the second half of the week.
Drier weather and warmer temperatures should return by the
weekend.

.UPDATE...Northwesterly winds persist in some parts of the forecast
area but by in large have begun to settle down and all the remaining
wind advisories were allowed to expire earlier this evening. Winds
will continue to ease through the overnight hours as our weather
system responsible for the windy and unsettled weather of late will
have pushed east into the Southern Plains states.  Fair weather and
warmer temperatures are on tap tomorrow. The forecast has things
well covered and no grid update is necessary.

.SHORT TERM...The Rest of Today through Tuesday.

So far, today is panning out as expected. Light precipitation has
been reported or noted on area webcams in parts of Lincoln and Clark
counties early this afternoon. Radar isn't picking up on
precipitation well, but IR satellite currently shows cold cloud
tops rotating into Clark County ahead of a vort max digging through
the mean cyclonic flow. Light rain was reported at Las Vegas, NV and
snow was evident on Spring Mountain webcams. This area of colder
cloud tops and precipitation will continue to shift southeast the
rest of the afternoon into northern Mohave County. Instability this
hour remains minimal so expecting similar conditions through the
rest of today with light precipitation reported at times. Updates
were made to precipitation chances through the afternoon to reflect
the current situation and expected trends.

Any precipitation that is still lingering over parts of Mohave and
Lincoln counties will quickly end after sunset. Winds will to
diminish this evening as well. Currently, wind impacts and highest
gusts were still focused in Esmeralda and Nye counties where
northwest winds were gusting 35 to 45 MPH, as well as in the W
Mojave Desert and Yucca Valley where west winds were gusting to
around 40 MPH this hour. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for these
areas through 4 PM PST as wind gusts over 40 MPH and wind impacts
are likely. An uptick in winds were noted in the Owens Valley where
northerly gusts were pushing 40 MPH, however this should be short
lived as the 500mb jet shifts east. Difficult travel and patchy
blowing dust will be possible in these areas through the next few
hours. NBM and HREF probabilities for gusts over 40 MPH do suggest
that windy conditions may linger an hour or two past the 4 PM end
time for the Wind Advisory in Nye and Emeralda counties. Considered
extending the Wind Advisory however the highest impacts will have
already occurred and winds will be on a rapid decrease. Continued
wind impacts with difficult travel and blowing dust may be possible
through 5 PM or 6PM PST in Nye and Esmeralda counties, but given the
decreasing winds and impacts and the short duration of continued
concern- did not extend the wind advisory. By 7 PM, probabilities
for over 40 MPH wind gusts is low and thus impacts should be over by
then area-wide.

A ridge builds in behind the exiting system tonight and Tuesday
which will bring a brief reprieve from the impactful weather. Winds
on Tuesday will be light across the region with dry conditions
prevailing as heights build. High temperatures on Tuesday will be
mild compared today as they climb about 5 degrees warmer than
today.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday.

After a brief break, a stronger trough will approach the West Coast
midweek, with rain showers and mountain snow spreading from west to
east through the area.  Overall, ensemble model agreement remains
fairly strong on this system, though minor differences remain in
regard to the storm systems depth and orientation. Notably, the
ECMWF based guidance favors a more open and progressive wave which
would tend to keep lower elevations drier, while GFS based guidance
suggests a sharper system with a hint of a negative tilt, which
would be more favorable for measurable precipitation in lower
elevations.

Regardless of these differences, chances for widespread
shower activity remain fairly high, especially north of I-40.
Southwesterly flow aloft will be favorable for orographic
precipitation enhancement across the Spring Mountains and southern
Great Basin, which, when combined with snow levels in the 6000-6500
range that then fall to the 4000 foot range, will result in some
winter weather impacts the higher terrain.  In addition to the
winter concerns, gusty winds and lower elevation rainfall potential
will also accompany this storm system. As mentioned previously,
there are differences in quantitative precipitation forecasts among
ensemble guidance, but most of the deserts are favored to see totals
of 0.10 inches or less, while heavier rain/snow totals are expected
with northward extent into the Southern Great Basin and higher
terrain of Northwest Arizona.

The storm system will shift east Friday with drier conditions
returning from west to east and temperatures returning to near
normal over the weekend. However, additional storm systems are
expected by early next week as an active parade of Western CONUS
troughs continues heading into mid-March.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Light
northwest winds will become light and variable early Tuesday
morning. These light and variable winds will continue through the
afternoon and evening hours. Winds will remain light and will settle
in from the west-northwest late Tuesday evening, continuing through
the overnight hours. FEW to SCT high clouds will push into the area
from the west but should not have any operational impacts.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...VGT will follow similar
trends to KLAS with northwest winds becoming light and variable
Tuesday morning. These light and variable winds will continue
through tomorrow evening when winds will settle in from the
northwest through the overnight hours. HND will see southwesterly
winds become light and variable Tuesday morning with these light and
variable winds sticking around through Tuesday evening when winds
will settle in from the south. Light winds at BIH will follow
typical diurnal directional trends with a period of light and
variable winds as they transition from northwest to southeast. DAG
will favor a strong westerly component through the TAF period. Gusty
westerly winds will continue through early tomorrow morning with
sustained speeds of 12 knots or less once wind gusts drop off.
Westerly winds will become light and variable early Tuesday morning
at EED. These light and variable winds will continue through the
evening hours when winds will settle in from the southwest. Light
and variable winds will settle in from the north-northwest early
tomorrow morning at IFP. These northerly winds will swing around to
the southeast after sunset.
